Either way /thread, imo. We're getting into beating deceased equines territory. Actually, we entered that a couple pages ago...

I give up. Be my guest and carry on with this train wreck of a thread.
Say, anyone have opinions on sleeveless jerseys? It's starting to get hot here in bay area. Suggestions on brands?

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
The fact that other groups do something different to mean the same thing is mutually exclusive of the fact that flicking your elbow means your pull is done. If someone else slaps their hip, instead, that doesn't change the 'flick's meaning.

Some people don't like minutiae and nuance.

Confusingly the hip/ass slap means, to me, "I'm about to attack/move to the front/do something and I want you on my wheel".

A little slap on the leg and a nod to the other rider means either you attack, I'm about to attack or let's go together.

I avoid group rides because of all the rules of engagement.
It is equally annoying when I'm just tooling through town on my fixie and some guy decked out in head to toe spandex busts a gut passing me and then begins using all those signals as if I can't make it through town without his guidance.
Even the elbow flick is brought into play as if I am interested in playing "tour" with him.

It's not a train wreck until JChristian starts posting. I'm sure he'd know all about the flick and it would end somewhere on page 37.
In other news. I got yelled at for not flicking. 'Show you're pulling off' cuz the racers behind me didn't have a clue right. And although I'm late the hip slap has got to be 'the dumbest ever of all times I would never ever do it ' signal. The first time I saw it I thought the guy ahead of me was swatting horseflies off his ass.
Don't forgot jazz hands to point out upcoming obstacles.

I got yelled at yesterday during a group ride. I'll never ride in a group again.

Most groups are fairly mellow and even minimally competent riders adapt quickly. People who ride in groups regularly might just have a habit of pointing things out. The fact that you oddly think it's a criticism of your riding ability might not be their problem.

I'm thinking the "hip slap" might be a European/French thing, since I've only seen a French dude (new to our group) do it. I interpreted it as "pay attention/wake up".

The guy I saw do it was American (not euro). I still can't comprehend the association with a hip slap and 'I'm pulling off you go ahead and lead a while'. It wasn't even this fast pop on the cheek. It was a slow, deliberate, drawn out action(Imagine someone prepping and cracking a bullwhip).
