Obviously one cannot extrapolate individual outcomes from aggregate analysis but, still, I find something wonderful about my cycling time, in a sense, being "free" time that pays for itself.
Apologies if this has already been posted, or is inappropriate for this sub.

So I am 62 yo. Life expectancy for males in my family is 85 years. That's 23 years to go. If I want to live to 100, lets see:
100 - 85 = 15 years. 15 / 23 = 0.652 = 65.2% of the time riding or 15 hours and 40 minutes per day. Say 10 miles per hour. That's 156 miles per day. 156 X 365 = 157,000 miles per year.
Actually I have already ridden that 157,000 miles. So I am good for another 15 years already. If I keep up my current 6k per year until 70, 4k till 80 and 1k till 85, where iwll that get me? 6,000 / 12 X 8 + 4,000 /10 X 10 + 1,000 / 8 X 5 = 8,625 hours = 0.99 years.
Hmmm, if I want to live to 110, I've got some work to do!
Ben

Nice ... I guess all those 90 hour 1200K randonnees I've done should give me lots of extra time.

Sure, unless you get hit by a car driven by some doofus teen that's texting instead of paying attention to their surroundings.

I hear stories about doctors limiting people activities. I love cycling. But I also realize that the repetitive motion of cycling isn't great. And that other activities like jogging and weight lifting are needed to supplement the exercise received from cycling (and so I do jog and workout). I bicycle for fun! But I do count my "fun" as exercise when trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

Interesting.
I've been on other forums where folks are much less active. I've seen a few posts where people were trying to calculate the amount of time they would need to exercise every day vs. how sooner they would die if they didn't exercise at all. You know, to see if it was worth it at all!

I have no desire to live to be 100 and care not about extended time derived from riding. Buddy I rode with yesterday is 67 and has 9,000 miles so far this year.

Eight hours of riding equals eight hours more of life. Think about this - you are only POSTPONING death for the same hours you ride...

From that article, that study was conducted in the Netherlands. Lots of people ride there. It would be interesting to see the data and how it was collected. I see two distinct group of riders: transportation riders and "sportive" riders. Did those researchers average these two types?

A chart I saw, which was relating moderate exercise (not specifically cycling) to life span, showed the benefits starting to taper to flat at about 90 minutes per day. It didn't go far enough to indicate where any diminishing returns would be, but it stopped improving at about 90 minutes.
