1980's Specialized Expedition specs

Hi Everyone

I'm checking out a 1980's Specialized Expedition on Craigslist soon. Does anyone know what the rear spacing would be? 130mm? Also, I'd like to be able to use a 35mm tire, would that fit? How about 38mm? The bike is in great condition and the frame size is just right so I"m hoping I'll be able to get a 7 spd cassette and some 35mm tires on it.

Thanks!

If it's anything like it's cousin, the Miyata 1000, it should be anywhere between 126-130mm, but most likely 126mm.

you can fit 35mm tires with fenders or 38mm without fenders.

If you end up getting it, make sure you post pics in the https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...ing-bikes.html thread! I'm sure it will be eye candy for many, including moi

Thanks for the info! I'll def need to put fenders on it so 35mm will be my max. I will surely post a pic. Haven't heard anything back from the owner since this morning so...my hunt for 52cm frame with canti bosses and decent tire clearance may continue

I have an 85 Miyata 1000 and it fits 37mm Contis just fine with a fender. Axle spacing is 126mm stock, I just wedge a 130 axle in without any trouble. Could spread the frame, but don't see any reason for it. Have not had a flat in 3 years with that bike.

This was more or less the first touring bike of the modern era that used tires fatter than the then standard 27 x 1 1/4". 35mm will fit for sure. Most likely 38mm will as well.

WRT rear spacing, I think these were 126mm OLD. I used to sell these, but it's been a long time. Most certainly not 130, which was a decade away. 120 was actually still used on some touring bikes well into the 80s. Yeah, so, 7 speed no problem.

Yep, I’m only hesitating because of the 700c wheels. I like 650b for most everything but 26” works too.
