I actually got to see John McLaughlin when I was a student at Humboldt State University, I think a year or two after my bikeforums join date. It was awesome... he was still very much healthy, "with it" and had this ominous, almost sinister presence at the front of the stage. I could feel all of the *****es Brew era "live evil" coming through.

I have this neat vinyl that I took from my parent's collection a while ago which is pretty neat too, "Love, Devotion, Surrender". I like how Carlos (Santana) as a rock and roll guy is clearly struggling with the weird jazzy, fusion, spiritual and generally weird vibes of John McLaughlin:

Total re-post, but this hypnotic, 26 min groove is probably what turned me onto jazz fusion in the first place. The piece takes on the form of a classical Rondo and has a simple (A-B-A-B)m form and has some great John McLaughlin lines. I found the album at the library in college.

The compilation album was released immediately before *****es Brew and represents the early developments of the fusion sound along with Filles de Kilimanjaro, which is another hitter from that era. It has no less than three keyboard players with Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock on Fender Rhodes pianos, and Joe Zawinul on organ. The key lines can overlap and become textured and cerebral, which makes me very happy .

I got a multi effects pedal thingy for my bday last week, it allegedly simulates many popular amp models and you can load what are called cabinet impulse responses which are supposed to emulate actual amplifier cabinets. Anyhow, I made a short video just playing a series of power chords to test a few patches I created. Personally am a fan of the 2nd option (the 5150), basically I'm just after a sound that isn't too dark and muddy or too bright/hissy. It's a decent unit, but so many of the factory presets go so heavy on the effects (that's generally like that across all of these products), so I'm just after some simple options. Anyhow, here's the video, although to call this music is charitable at best lol

Yep. I haven't seen it, but a lot of the ton's revenue is generated by grow-op's up "on the hill". One generally needs to be careful about avoiding private property once you get out in the woods away from town.

*****es Brew is a GREAT album.

But Zappa made some awesome jazz/rock fusion albums with Hot Rats and The Grand Wazoo.

You might not like Zappa, but these albums are fantastic for forging a fusion of jazz and rock.

I know that you know his guitar playing on Miles Tribute to Jack Johnson. It was so much better than this drek.

You know I've been a Zappa fan since 1966, or so.

I've been listening to a ton of Reggaeton in my quest to master Spanish. I love it but its essentially a mix of electronic and pop music. I'm pretty sure if I posted a video Hermes and TMonk would stab their ears with a fork to make it stop. Right now Bad Bunny is probably the most popular artist in the world, although his latest album wasn't as good as the one he released in February 2020.

I don't know if I'd stab my ears but I can't stand it. I worked next to a guy who played Reggaeton sometimes and I hated it and I demanded he turn it off when it got to me.

I'm not into Reggaeton so much. I do have taste in Reggae though, mostly roots stuff like African Herbsman era Marley, Peter Tosh and Max Romeo. I do like to marry electronic music and reggae as well, especially with dub reggae. I love King Tubby and the Scientist as well. The early dub artists where some of the first pioneers of electronic/digital/post production music. Check the Twinkle Brothers (named after an early synth sound) for a middle road between full on dub reggae and a standard "organic" musical band.

I think between 12-15 years old I went through a massive reggae phase, which is pretty much required listening in Santa Cruz (or any other surf town). During that same time Bradley Nowell of Sublime was up there as well so you can see where he got some of that influence. I listened to Jimmy Cliff, Marley, and Peter Tosh so much I don't think I could stand it anymore. I always go through musical phases listen to it nonstop and then burn out on it.

Reggaeton has very little to do with reggae though, just that it originated in the Caribbean in poor areas. Definitely more an electronic sound.

I finally made a "song" I started with messing with a little thing in C# phrygian and just kind of going with that and using a drum program called ezdrummer 2 to make the drums using some pre-made drum grooves, so I kind of tailored my playing to the beat as opposed to making the guitar and then designing drums around the guitar. Anyway, it's bad, it's amateurish, but it's my song lol

Since suspending piano lessons due to covid, I am stagnating on the piano. Yeah, I am playing stuff better and some a lot better but no real new techniques or critique. My wife will say, you sound just like him. Well, not really but not bad. I am going to restart in March and cannot wait. Without a “performance” in front of a real teacher and critique of results I am not as motivated to practice.

I think cycling is the same. Without racing, competition and results and a coach, I am stagnating. Hopefully, this changes soon.

It is not always the music. But the music is pretty good. ~60 year old amp. Refurb Scott LK-72. Think of driving a 70s Cadillac.

Restarted piano lessons and played the entire Art of the Fugue I. She loved it and of course offered some corrections and areas to work on. Considering the Fugue performance, she thinks I should do a longer piece that will build on techniques in the Fugue and suggested Bach’s Italian Concerto.

Well, for 300 year old music, the Italian Concerto is totally cool but stupid hard. The rhythms are outrageous but sound bad ass and super cool. Why not. Here is the first movement of three and probably the most recognizable.

My mother (a classical pianist) likes to play that first movement a lot. I instantly recognized it, although I can't say so about the title.
