Question Bafang BBS01/02 + Shimano Nexus 5 ?

Hello,

Unlike the older models, the Shimano Nexus 5 was built for e-bikes.

Out of curiosity, can it be used…
  • Without hooking it up to a Shimano Steps mid-drive, just like a regular Shimano gear hub
  • Manually (ie. with a classic, cable-actuated shifter instead of a Di2 shifter)
  • With a Bafang BBS01/BBS02 mid drive engine, or will it only connect to a Shimano Steps motor
?

Thank you.

The SL C-7005 lever is compatible. How would the rear hub "know" which motor it's attached to?

I guess it depends on how the motor talks to the controller. If the Nexus 5 only works through Di2 and will only talk to a Shimano Steps motor, it might be difficult.

Google returned no hits on such a setup.

If you go cable then just put a shift sensor on the cable.

Lots of people ride with no shift sensor so that is an option as well.
