Wheel on the bike emergency tire tube?

I was at Walmart the other day and I always look in their bike section. I saw an inner tube that was NOT round, just a long straight tube. The packaging said "no wheel removal necessary". Has anyone tried one of these or is it a total gimmick.. Obviously it would be for emergencies only and I'm betting you'd feel a "thump" every time the wheel went around. Still, if it were raining or you were in a hurry this thing might just work? I tried a google search and couldn't find the tube or I would have posted a pic

It works, because I've seen people tie a knot in a torn tube, air it up, and it holds. Not necessarily the smoothest ride with the knotted tube, so I dunno how the sausage-shaped tubes would fair wheel balance-wise.

Since rear tires flat about 3 times as often as fronts, I can see value in that tube for bikes with IGH or hub brakes that have a lot of "stuff" to disconnect when you remove the rear wheel. Still have to pry the tire bead off of the rim and still have to find that tiny little wire that probably caused the flat in the first place. Not something that would benefit me.

This must be a real YMMV statement, because my front flats outnumber rear flats by 2:1. So while I get 6x as many flats on the front, I get half as many rear flats as other folks, so I've got that going for me.
