I've got a karate monkey for the trails. Built it up with stuff from cyclecomponents, chainreactioncycles and lbs for about $1500, but you can go way cheaper than that.

Here are the Finnish vendors I deal with 90% of time; Surly stuff from from Foxcomp (www.foxcomp.fi), On-One stuff from Draktor (www.draktor.com), Nitto and EAI from Horscategorie (horscategorie.com). Fixed, Inc. stuff from Pyorähuolto (pyorahuolto.com) Hard to get vintage stuff and custom machine work from Pyörätohtori (pyoratohtori.fi). Also, Swedish net vendor Cyclecomponets.com and of course Chain Reaction Cycles in the UK.

In general, Sweden is approx. 25% cheaper

Sweet ride!
Seconded! Very, very close to my ideal setup... altough I´d add the semi-legendary Magura 66 road-lever hydraulic rim brakes. could you possibly tell what kind of stem you are using with Midge bars?

Hot damn, those are big tires. They're the Surly Large Marge rims, right? What size tires? How much, if you don't mind me asking, for the whole thing? How much does it weigh?

No, actually I have a wheelset with disc brakes for this bike, but I don't use them anymore. I have other bikes with discs so light wheels with vbrakes is really nice on this bike.

Good to know. I didn't know that disc breaks were particularly heavy. Considering they tend to be more expensive, too, I'll have to reconsider this. Thanks!

LOL! I know that one. Also known as the "drilling boat". Drilling, in this context... ummm..... has to do with some promisquous behaviour.

Anyhow, drop me a PM if you're coming o'er here.

Disc brakes aren't that heavy and there are some pretty strong benefits. Maybe you'd gain 200 grams? Not a big deal IMHO. I've taken to riding around my mtn bike when it's wet out just because i don't have to deal with that whole "oh I guess my brakes won't work for a few seconds, I wish I really could have them right now" thing.

Good to know. Do you have a ballpark cost differential?

Cable discs are going to be cheaper than hydraulics and are probably more than good enough for the applications that you seem to want to use them for. I don't really know the cost difference but it probably is not inconsequential.

EDIT: also that surly is the best looking to my eyes bike I've seen on here in a long time.

addendum: ok so I looked on qbp (just from the harris link) and an LX hydro set is going to run 325 vs an lx v-brake set is going to be all of 100 bucks. I don't know the prices on avid cable brakes though.
