Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is the best stock alloy bike for crit racing?

Excluding any Cannondale, what would be the best stock alloy bike for crit racing? Ooo, and lets keep it under 3k.

Anyone own one of those Neuvation bikes? Their alloy bike looks pretty nice. Nearly full Ultegra for 1500ish.

why would you want a $3k alloy bike for crits?
if you crash, you're still $3k down.

I agree. You can get a pretty good carbon bike for $3,000 and there's a lot more selection.

Er, unless the bike explodes in a ball of flames, what you're worried about in a crash is the frame. So, keep it alloy, the replacement price of the frame is much less.

I would bet that a CAAD10 crash replacement frame is not exactly a bargain.

Anyway...

I would buy the Allez Apex or the OSBB frame & fork and roll your own. The Allez Rival is too expensive. I respect it as a machine, but can't recommend it for the value.

Honestly I don't understand why you aren't just buying a bare frame anyway. The stock seatpost and stem will probably be bricks, the stock saddle unlikely to work, and of course the stock wheels are junk for racing (although bulletproof for training). And many people change their bars-- I would.

Did you want alloy for a specific reason? or were you afraid of ruining a CAAD and/or carbon in a crit?

If you don't mind trying carbon, get a PedalForce (pedalforce.com) frame. It's an off brand made in the Giant factory if my memory serves me correct, but, I did a lot of research on those frames and people seem to be happy with them.

I ride one and it is stiff and at less than $1000 for frame and fork you can pair that up with a decent group set and have a sub-$2000 bike.

no frame is crash proof and if they cost the same price, then obviously the replacement will cost the same.

because, you know, a motorbike going 60mph is faster than a car going 60mph.

Oh God. This is when you start pushing no-name Chinese plastic isn't it?

I think you'll find that from reputable manufacturers of high-end frames, aluminum is cheaper.

Only on BF would I have to make such a clarifying statement...

yes, because the chinese are evil and they only make cheap garbage.

sheesh, the sinophobia is rampant in BF.

Not necessarily, depending on the crash replacement deal offered by a manufacturer.

I really don't get the worry about racing a bike with a frame that may cost $750 or so to replace on a crash replacement deal.

That potential cost is a fairly small part of the total cost/risk. Most people will spend a multiple of that on gas, hotels, meals, entry fees replacement parts from wear, etc.

And your real risk is that you will disable yourself from working for a significant period of time. While that risk is less likely than trashing a frame, the consequences are several orders of magnitude greater.

So why would anyone race a crit with a body/brain with a 7 figure present value earning stream?
