Under-employed, $ tight, replacing much of drivetrain on a limited budget.

My rear rim is caved and the rear hub is acting up. The wheel is a Weinmann DP18 36 H laced to a Shimano FH 2200. Tried to recall how long I've been riding these, closest I can figure is @ 3 years (the front wheel seems fine btw) and I've bashed some nasty potholes in that time. My LBS is going to order a new pair and work a deal with me & just sell me the rear wheel. Sounds like it'll be around $100.

My question is: for commuting & light-touring, can I do better in terms of price and/or performance? I'd appreciate any opinions.

Don't know what kind of spacing you're working with, but since your front is OK, I'd look at putting the $100 plus just a few more to get you the kind of wheel I have -- a Velocity Dyad rim, 36 spoke, and Deore LX hub handmade by Handspun. They can be had for around $120. I weigh ~300, commute with a sometimes heavy load. That wheel has lasted me about 5k miles at this point. Broke one spoke when I got something stuck in the spokes. Otherwise one other truing job and the wheel is still going strong. Love it. 135 mm spacing.

Off the net, old fashioned walk in ?
a replacement wheel, (Generic, mix hub/rim the wholesaler choice) , or say what hub you need
see what they have on offer to order, or build there..
with the tensioning and such done at the local shop

would save you shipping , and have help should you have trouble with it ..
they have an interest in seeing you shop there again .
