DI2 Users - Curious to know which mode you prefer (full or semi-synchro)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

DI2 Users - Curious to know which mode you prefer (full or semi-synchro)

Hey guys,

I'm curious to know which mode you prefer more between semi-synchro or full-synchro and why?

I've been using the 2 (switching every few rides) ever since I got my new bike & having a hard time figuring out which one I like most. I liked the full-synchro at first, but the automatic front derailleur shifting gets annoying at some point (I know you can customize when to shift and I should probably delay that a little). Plus, I kind of missed using my control lever to shift. On the semi-synchro mode, I get to use both levers and the rear derailleur automatically compensates. I guess it's a kind of a ''how you feel'' type of thing.

I use the semi-syncro - but I only have it configured to change when shifting from the small front ring to the big (automatically shifts two in the rear). I don't have it change when going from the big ring to the small.

Full Synchro for me. D-Fly and Garmin warn me when the the FD is going to shift so I never get surprised, otherwise I'd go Semi Synchro.

No synchro. I have the cassette / chainring position readout on my Bolt. I just count cassette switches and have gotten so used to it that looking back at the cassette is awkward now!

None. I run a 14-28 cassette with a 34/50 crank. I pretty much live in the big ring unless I am forced to climb a hill. Note I’m on mostly flat Long Island.

Same, except sub 11-28T and 52/36, and Los Angeles for Long Island.

I run full synchro but shift manually. Full synchro keeps me from riding big/big and shifts me to the big ring when I going to higher gears when in the small ring. It is rare that these two situations occur, but is nice to have.

That's exactly what I need to do. Is this new in the latest generation?

It came out when they came out with the synchro shifting. If you dig into the settings for semi you’ll see the option to change the number of gears that change with upsides and downshifts. If I remember correctly I think I just changed it to zero. Either that or there was a checkbox to disable it. If you can’t find it I can dig through the settings and find exactly what it is.

Semi. Small to big is configured to go 2 bigger sprockets in the rear, resulting in a slight upshift, but less than the chainring change. The opposite for big to small, except I think I set it to go 3 smaller, so it's closer to parity.

Don't have Di2, but if I did, I'd run full synchro and configure the lever buttons so left and right do the same thing. Kinda the opposite of etap - either hand can shift the whole drivetrain instead of needing both hands.

I don't have the wireless module so I can't see my gears, but yes it's kind of annoying when the FD shifts and you don't expect it to, especially when you're climbing. It's at least 1 extra second to set everything up correctly and can fail if you're putting stress on your chain.

Semi-synchro without the RD shifting when going from the big to the small ring is a good idea. Hadn't thought of that!

I've enabled both full- and semi-syncro modes to play with, but have always gone back to fully manual. Where I ride the terrain is rolling hills and it seems like the automatic gear jumps on average make sense (I have Di2 set for a 2 cassette change for a chainring shift), but in a lot of cases I find that I want either a larger or smaller jump depending on the circumstances, in which case I find myself fighting against what Di2 wants to do. In manual mode, I just pay attention to what's coming up and have the feel for how many shifts I want and the muscle memory to hold the shifter for the correct amount of time to get the gear I need.

Mine is set to full synchro, but I shift manually about 75% of the time anyway.

I've tried the various synchro programs (including custom programs) several times, but I keep going back to traditional shifting. I like the added control and knowing exactly where I am in the cassette.

^ Same reason I use manual. I just click over however many cogs I want the move over on the cassette, usually 1 or 2. I'm willing to lose some gear steps to stay in the big ring, using all but the largest rear cogs, after reading VeloNews' test results on friction loss on 2X drivetrains, I'll also shift out of the little ring as soon as I can, overall minimizing front shifting, so there's no advantage to giving Di2 control over it.

When I bought my bike it came with no synchro modes enabled and I've left it as for the past two years. I keep thinking I'll play around with semi synchro but never get around to giving it a try.

The thing about the synchro modes is the system just does it perfectly.

The downside is when you've been riding mech your entire life, even after you've set it up, you still forget sometimes.

Semi. Have run it for a year like that and don't hate it as much as I did initially. Most of my triathlete customers have gone full synchro. I am not fully satisfied with the 2 cog move in semi. Need to change it to 3 when dropping from big to small maybe. Not really sure yet. I just automatically shift when changing rings out of habit so hard to tell.

Full Syncro. Love never having to use the left shifter... Having it connected to the Garmin Edge means no surprise shifts from small to big or big to small front chain ring.
