Standard Sprocket size for a 17" rear wheel

Hi all,

I'm looking for what is the standard sprocket size for a 17" rear wheel. I saw two wheels earlier and they had the same sized sprockets (different manufacturers) and just wanted to know the diameter of the sprocket that you would use on a 17" (420mm) rear wheel

er, what hub do you have in the middle of that wheel?

sprocket choice is about the Gear ratio, so what size is a function of what gear ratio you wish too

Don't know about current models, but the Lightning P-38 (recumbent) and some Moulton bicycles have used 369 - 17" wheels (front wheel only on the P-38). Sheldon lists that size.
OP says 420 so more info is needed.

17" x 1 1/4" (ISO 32-369) is standard on Moulton bikes and the front of older Lightning recumbents like the one in my garage.

I agree with the others- there's no such thing as a "standard" size sprocket. It depends on the hub, the intended use, and size of the chainwheel, among other factors.

Actually, the words "standard" and "bicycle" pretty much don't go together. There are a few components that are standardized to the degree that there are only 2 or 3 possible sizes but that's just to lure you into thinking you can order ANYTHING without either measuring or knowing exactly what you have.

That is what I love about this site! I learn something new almost everyday. Never having worked on a Moulton I always assumed they were 20 or 16 wheels.

More importantly the OP has not checked back in to give us more information.

Good point about the OP never having replied or clarified his request. We see that from time to time. Someone asks a question but gives inadequate information. There are numerous replies, many with conjecture about what the OP really wanted to know but the OP never shows up again.

I had never heard of 17" wheels either and that's new info to me too. Accoring to Sheldon Brown's list there is no ISO 420 rim. The closest is ISO 419 used on some Schwinn kids bikes and was called a 20".

Yeah, well, it was worse in the Olde Days (stolen from C&V):

Sounds like another case of someone getting the tape measure out to determine wheel size rather than reading it off the tire.

Yeah, that was the case on the thread where I stole the Canadian tire scans from. Someone was trying to figure out the tire size for an old Free Spirit, after throwing the old tires out. Probably 26 x 1 3/8 (EA3), I think.
