Long cage vs. short cage
I've been looking for a decent condition Simplex SX610 or 630 rear derailleur and haven't liked what I've seen on e-bay lately. Yesterday, I found an SX630GT (long cage) only it was attached to a bike and I may go back to the shop and get it since the price was really good (just need to convince my other half it's a smart move).
So, here's my questions. The SX630 I currently have is a short cage and works ok. The one I found is a long cage. My bike set up will be 52-42 and 12-24 7 spd. I know the long cage derailleurs were designed for the lower gearing of touring bikes (28t to 34T). It should work fine for the 24T I have for my low gear. But, what kind of performance difference is there in shifting? Does it make sense to use this long cage derailleur or should I just wait for a short cage for the gearing I have.

There's a long cage SLJ 6600 closing in four hours on eBay. It's my holy grail, but I owe taxes. My little tax deduction grew up.
You don't need a long cage, but it won't hurt.
I'd be willing to trade an SX610 short cage for a Simplex down tube stop. I have more than I'll ever need.
