does anyone remember when this was not an issue? I can still remember how we leered at the first rider to get a call during the sunday morning bagel run. we almost threw it in the woods! good thing it was the office and he was the 'on call doctor' but we still teased him about it the rest of the ride.

I leave mine at home unless I'm going on a weekend tour then it goes into my seat bag encased in a small zip lock bag just in case it rains, which if you're going to carry one routinely is a pretty good idea to put it inside a zip lock bag.
By the way, the reason I don't carry my phone is because I don't want to use my wife as a mommy to come get me if something happens, by not carrying it it forces me to find solutions to problems, and my wife is happier about the hobby...though she would have no problem coming to get me but I don't want to burden her with that. I've rode for a good 20 years before cell phones came along so I think I can ride without one now.

I'm glad I ran into this since I feel it's important to carry a phone on a long bike ride.
I used to carry my iPhone 4 in a small saddlebag with keys and some cash. Then as a gift, I got one of those new huge Samsung note phones and I'm having the toughest time trying to figure out how to carry one of those things on my road bike.
I'm thinking of converting one of the bottle cages to carry it but of course that would deprive me of water on a very long ride.

I generally leave it at home. I don't ride anywhere that I couldn't find a car in the case of a crucial failure. I carry tools to fix everything else.

Still put it in my jersey pocket, just as I did 7 years ago when I first replied to this thread.

Old school flip phone for emergency voice calls is in my left rear jersey pocket. Usually I pull over to answer it. I always pull over to make a call.
Smart phone sits in a handlebar bag, usually with whatever cycling app I like running in the background. I never use the smart phone while riding. If I need to consult a map or snap a photo I pull over. If I was in a big enough hurry to need on-the-fly navigation, I'd use voice navigation not visual cues from a map on the handlebar.

BEWARE: 7 year old thread.
The OP has probably solved his problem by now (which was having the phone bounce about in his pocket) so the question is, why are people still replying?

No, the word "knickers" generally has the same meaning here. I was just trying to figure out what Victoria's Secret product actually had legs that extended down to the calf.

I carry a cell phone for communication, in particular because I am often on call for work; for navigation; as a camera; and as a listening device. I like to keep my [large] I-Phone 6+ on my chest close to my head so I can hear it, and have it easily accessible to answer a call, take a photo, or spot my position on the confusing, haphazard thoroughfares of Metro Boston…
So my final, and most satisfactory innovation was to buy a Hidden Security Waist Wallet with a top zippered opening from L.L. Bean for about $9.00, and a pair of suspenders with clips. I then shortened the front suspender straps as short as possible, and fashioned a “shoulder holster” as it were, that comfortably holds the I-phone high to make it easily accessible.
I call it an ”I-bra.” . As mentioned above, I usually wear a yellow cycling vest, so the holster doesn’t show.

When I bike, I dont carry my cell phone or ride with ear phones. I like to just enjoy cycling, and its much more peaceful with out them.
Contrary to public opinion, life can go on without a smart phone!
