Ah, BMX pedals. They look awesome but, to my knowledge, won't take clips and straps; I like having those on my touring rig. They might work on my grocery-getter, though.

yep, they don't take clips or straps. This was fine for my needs as we were travelling across terrain that was very difficult, sand, marsh, corrugated rocky tracks, so we were on and off the pedals a lot, been strapped in would of made it very difficult to manage the bikes.

A tour from last year. The bloke I went with struggled a lot, so I ended up carrying his gear for him.

This is my first tour and I didn't have a ton of money for gear so I went with the 'use what you've got' philosophy. Giant Escape 2 with 700 x 32C Marathon Mondials and Nuke Proof Electron Evo pedals. Everything else on the bike is stock. Ortlieb classic rear panniers, a 20L Sea to Summit drysack as a trunkbag, and a custom handlebar 'bag' made by a friend from an army surplus pack-roll. I lash my Thermarest over the top of that with a Sea to Summit 2m bomber tie-down strap. I've done over 2,000km so far and the everything has performed beautifully.

Photo taken at Los Reyunos, Mendoza Province, Argentina.

The use what you got method is fine, depending on the bike. Hybrids like yours work well, good gearing generally and perhaps really only needing a sturdier rear wheel depending on the weight that's on it, although if yours works well then great. Have a great rest of trip.

^^^ Agreed.

The forum says that you're a newbie but with 2,000km behind you, I'd say you're not. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Thanks djb and jrickards! It has been a huge learning experience and I'm definitely a much better rider now. It's difficult to believe I used to complain about a headwind riding 12km to work in the city I've been riding through Patagonia these past few days and it's just blowing my mind how beautiful everything is! Thanks again for the encouraging words.
