Kinda old thread but in the beginning the OP was interested in old and some modern. Since I don't have any C&V 1x, I have to contribute my more modern one. Even this is a stretch as it is 1x1!

Before I found the flip/flop hub, I tried to use a pair of Campagnolo HF hubs. I actually like the look of it better this way and it does look and little more C&V

Cool bike! I think it does look better in that 2nd pic with the box section rims and without the blue accents. And a set of gum/skin wall tires would really make it pop.

I was doing 1x before it was cool! 1970 Schwinn Twinn, far from original. What looks like a front derailer is actually a "railer", there because the chain kept falling off the chainring. It's been reliable for 30 years since I put the railer on.



Note the Cinelli stem, Campy headset and Idéale saddles, Lefol "hammered" front fender. Schwinn purists would like to excommunicate me from the brotherhood, but it's fun to ride.

The fork is from an actual Schwinn (sorta) but not from Chicago; it's from some late-'80s MTB. Cimarron maybe? Made in Japan by Tange. The Mafac canti front brake makes the bike rideable. The original wimpy aluminum Weinmann sidepull was a "brake-shaped object" that didn't slow the bike noticeably.

More mods a-comin', because the rear rim is still steel with the horrible Schwinn "middleweight" tire, and the low gear still ain't low enough despite the 38-tooth sprocket. Thinking of a new wheel with a Maxicar drum brake, 559 rim, maybe Rat Trap Pass tires? Rear Lefol fender, natch. And TA Pro 5-vis Cyclotouriste cranks with BB adapters for one-piece-to-three-piece crank conversion (eccentric in front), to get a smaller chainring. And aero bars! OK just kidding about the bars but I'm serious about the Rene Herse tires. We're all about low rolling resistance.

The bike weighed 80 pounds (not a joke, actual weight) with the original solid steel (not tubular) fork and steel front rim. It's a little lighter now but it still weighed 165 pounds one time when we got back from a grocery run with an especially large load. I put the bathroom scale under the front wheel then the rear and added up, accurate enough for me. It was still plenty rideable at that weight and no, that does not include the riders!

Not my oldest 1x bike, that would be my 1933 Excelsior. Now that we've "broken the seal" on allowing 1x1 as counting as a 1x bike.

After a few fun rides on the old Humber set up in drop bar/flipped North Road mode, I decided that I like it better as an upright bike. So, back on went the fenders and chainguard. I also opted for a thumb shifter. I kept the 700c wheels and switched tires to a set of 28mm Paselas I had here. The fender lines would be better with 27" wheels and meatier tires, but they don't bother me and this wheelset livens up the ride nicely. The only other 27" wheels I have here are steel rimmed.

For quite a while this was The Ride - Model B, TA 3-pin with a 46 (I think) and a 12-24 Suntour Winner, rear mech is Jubilee, pedals Campy something-or-other-modern, hubs Record, rims Open4CD, Cinelli bars and stem, first gen DuraAce brakes and some Modolo levers (I think):
