Looking to Buy Vtg Miyata

I am in the market for a vintage Miyata road bike. I came across a 1985 Miyata Pro equipped with Shimano 105 and also a 1987 Miyata 712 competition. I believe both are triple butted, correct me if I am wrong. The Miyata 712 has the brake cable running thru the top tube for aero reasons I assume. I hear they can sometimes have cracks near the cable openings. Which would you recommend? Would be used for some light commuting but more so fitness.

The pro is the higher end model, but a 712 is a very nice frame as well. For me, fit and condition would be the deciding factors.

Yeah, I would change this to "for 99.9% of us."

The high-end Miyata frames from that era are fantastic. Assuming both fit, I would go for the Pro. The cracking issue you note about the 712's internal cable routing is a real concern. I'm not sure how fast that happens or what conditions catalyze the effect, but I have seen more than one example. As I understand it, it's accepted as a flaw in retrospect that they did not reinforce the opening.

I had this happen to a 1400 that I bought new in '89....I would still be riding that bike now otherwise Only real design issue I am aware of with miyata, build, ride and tubing are superb

Yeah, that was my main concern with internal cable. The guy has the Pro Miyata listed as 56cm frame size. Did they even make 56cm, I thought it was a set 57cm according to Miyatas catalog.

Yes go Pro, I have an '81 Professional it's a little heavy compared to others of the time but the ride is well above most of the bikes of its day. If you can find it go for the iconic blue and gold scheme.

omg this is an old picture, right after I built the wheels
