I briefly worked at Illinois Cycle many years ago when i was broke and had a young family. While there I coveted a Raleigh Touring 14. It seemed like a ticket to adventure that I couldnt afford. Well I just ran into a nearly perfect example with the Illinois Cycle sticker on it and its my size. 80 bucks and I couldnt pass it up. I definitly dont need it but its fun.
Double butted 4130, suntour barcons and cantis. What more could you need?
SCORE!!
That's a GEM! I have a Touring 18...Love it.

I think nostalgia is a great reason to want and preserve a vintage bike. My first "good" bike was a entry level Takara 960 Deluxe touring I bought in 1981. In '83 I started a family and did not have time to spend riding a bike all over the country side or the money to even buy tires for it. I let the thing rot behind the garage until I took it to the dump in probably '88 or '89 where I saw someone immediately take it off the pile. Regret number 1.

Some time back on craigslist or facebook marketplace, I came across a Takara 960 for $75 but passed on it simply because the front brake was missing and the pictures indicated it needed a lot of work. Regret number 2.

Recently I found an '81 Takara 950 Deluxe 12 that not only was close to my old bike, but was 100% original. The tires, while dry rotted, still had the little nibs and the bike did not appear to have been used much at all and very well stored. I snatched it up in a heartbeat and I feel 18 again when I ride it. If I ever run across a 960 again no matter what condition, I probably won't pass this time.
