Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Rode the fixed gear up the mountain last night. Took a little longer than normal but wasn't really that bad, although I cheated and took my chain off so I could coast down the hill. Got snow flurries at the summit and my fingers and toes froze on the way down. An officer at the US Customs station took pity and made me some coffee on the way back into town. Super nice dude.

Today my Fuji Allegro was stolen

Police took a report, but then asked me if I had any printed pictures for them to put on the bulletin board at work and keep an eye out for.... which makes me think it isn't being taken super seriously. I dunno. Bike thieves suck.

We should play bikes or something. Go up to East bay or something and do a big ss/fg meet up thing.

Thank you for reminding me of this book and providing inspiration for a ride to the library yesterday. I like it a lot, although admittedly so far it has been little more than three chapters of delicious confirmation bias.

i just had the fantastically stupid idea to have a modern custom version of a non folding raleigh twenty built, for use as a fixed gear with fat bmx tires.

why? why the **** not?

It wouldn't give you any of the advantages of either a bmx bike (compact frame for jumping) or a mountain bike (easily ridden over obstacles) so it would just look like a hipster had too much money one day. Is that what you are going for?

Weird is good, as long as it doesn't kill you or land you in jail.
