A wave, a nod, a smile, a lift of the fingers from the bars... it's all good around here. If I don't get any of the aforementioned acknowledgements from a passing cyclist I don't sweat it.

I've been in plenty of rural areas where even motorists wave at each other. They probably think it's strange that we city dwellers don't wave.

On the local MUT, in my case the W & OD trail in NoVA, hells no. No wave, head nod, verbal. It's get tiring real quick. Out in the boonies on a road ride, gravel ride - Yes. Gotta be civil.

My observation in my neck of the woods depends how fast you are going. Acknowledgement to other riders progress from hand wave, to fingers off the bar, to head nod, to glancing at the other rider dependent on speed.

Harley riders do the hand to the side or hand down to other Harley riders. Every once in a blue moon a crotch rocket gets a wave or nod lol. Corvette owners do the finger off the steering wheel. I'm pretty sure jeep owners and VW aficionados do it as well.

Depends on speed anywhere from a full on wave to two fingers lifted off the handlebars/hoods.

I live in Phoenix and people are generally pretty friendly here. My neighborhood has a 2.5 mile loop that has a generous sized sidewalk and bike lanes, so there are many people outside walking, running and cycling in the mornings. If I'm cycling, I usually only wave to the runners and walkers who make eye contact. I try to wave to all cyclists in either direction. My form of wave is extending a hand outward and towards the ground. For those cyclists who don't wave, I understand that some aren't as comfortable on the bike and need to keep both hands firmly on the handlebars.

I’m into connecting with other human beings so I wave at other bikers when I ride, I wave at other runners when I run (even when overtaking them) and I will wave at cars driving past my house if I’m in the yard. It’s part of being a nice person and growing up in the South. It’s part of southern charm and being cordial.

Up here in Toronto, I'll get a mix of reactions to my "good morning", wave or head nod. Most times; I'd say 80% of the time I'll get the same response.

No expectations of course when the rider needs concentration on a climb, descent, or if there's a traffic decision he/she needs to make in front of them in the moment.

I've been riding a motorcycle for 20 years, a sport touring Kawasaki and a dual-sport Suzuki, and find that about half of the Harley riders wave, especially in the summer, in the winter I find that most everyone waves, even the bikers with apehangers wave then. I wave to everyone, it is the camaraderie but I had a 67 Volkswagen Bus for many years and found that other VWs drivers would wave, but I found that I was rather snobbish. The 67 was a split window, an older bus, and I tended not to wave to those that had a newer, non-split.

I bike mostly on MUTs in the morning and tend to see the same people day in and day out, I wave, say good morning or give a nod to most everyone, and most return the greeting, but if someone doesn't even look my way I just go on my way. I try to be friendly and those greetings can make the trip a little nicer.

There was a well known bicyclist (now deceased) who used to get quite upset if another bicyclist didn't return his wave.

Around here in North NJ it's usually a head nod or a lifting of a finger or two. But this area is so densely populated and you see so many bikers out there, it almost becomes a burden to acknowledge everyone you pass on a bike. Therefore I don't bother anymore unless someone acknowledges me first. I will then always reciprocate.

I usually wave/return wave to almost all the local cyclists, and also the pedestrians and homeowners and motorists who wave at me when I ride in residential areas.
