first long ride tomorrow (on long island, ny)
I'm a bit nervous bc I have to do it solo. only experienced cyclist I know bailed on me.
for those that know the area, I'm planning on taking 25A from Manhasset to Huntington.
Tour De Starbucks, if you will
:eek3:

is that 17 miles?? round trip of 34?
Is it really hilly? I am sure your 2009 Felt F3L carbon rival knows the way. What could your buddy do for you anyway besides help you change a flat? Bring enough water and some money for Latte.

I suggest you stay on roads north of 25A as much as you can. OF course this will be a longer more convoluted routes, but north of 25a you'll find very nice winding roads, hills, the cars are fewer and slower, and the scenery is more pleasant. 25A is rideable but there are long stretches with debris filled shoulders and a constant stream of cars passing you at 70+MPH. If I wanted to go east-west as efficiently as possible, I'd rather ride the LIE service road than 25A.

No extended climbs obviously, but stay to the north of the Island and you can easily put together 100+ mile rides with very little flat and more nasty steep little climbs than a sane person would want.

definitely interested. i live in NYC and work in Garden City, but I grew up in Port Jeff. definitely plan to do some rides out there.

+1 to mihlbach.
There's nothing to recommend 25A through this area past Roslyn. Rather, Sea Cliff, Glen Cove, Lattingtown, Oyster Bay and finally 25A long enough to get to Cold Spring Harbor. Then north or south again depending where in Huntington you're going.
