Public Service Announcement: 31.8 quill stems from Velo Orange
Velo Orange just released a quill stem for 31.8 bars with a removable faceplate. Not the prettiest thing I've every seen, but it's got to beat a threadless adapter, right?

The welded quill stems with a top cap never really did much for me- the whole appeal of a quill for me is the smooth transition from stem to extension to clamp.
But hey- more options are a good thing.

I really admire Velo Orange for what they do - it takes real branding knowhow to make buying a walmart mountain bike stem for eighty dollars seem anything other than insane.

Steel is a deal-breaker for me. I'm not sure what V.O. sees as an advantage with that.

395g! Ok ok, a Technomic is 376g, but longer...so maybe not as overweight? I am glad for options, especially in the quill stem to 31.8 bar arena--very tough nut to crack, aesthetically. So far.....it still needs to be cracked. Or maybe more people need to know about Soma Highway Ones and Nitto Noodles, call it a day, and leave 31.8 bars and stems to those of us that do quill stem conversions for hotrodding vintage framesets (raises hand). I have bounced a quill stem with replaceable (face) plate for a 31.8mm bar design or two around in my head. I need to take that up again. Sometimes I have dreams of doing the VO thing, but a few steps further (make a full groupset) design-wise. I think that would be immensely enjoyable. But I digress...

There is a cheaper version of the Factory Five stem. I have one. Not as polished and cheaper bolts. I'm not confident in the bolts, replaced them with steel. No heavier than any of my Nitto Youngs. I like it, and what I can do with it, should I decide to use short/shallow carbon bars on my tourer. However, I am not confident even with the steel bolts, because there are only two and it flexes.
