Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sella Italia Flite

Old school seat, but best seat ever? You tell me. I received mine from Performance yesterday and absolutely love it. Much better than the crappy Arione I had to sell on Ebay at a loss.

I tried one for about a year, and ultimately went back to the Max Flite I had used previously. The Max Flite fits me much better, and is much more comfortable. As is normal for these discussions though, it's worth mentioning that everyone's butt is different, and your results may vary.

With out a doubt my favoritist saddle of all time! Looks good, but is super comfy with the right amount of give.

It was the saddle that ushered in the minimalist saddle designs, with excess not require areas cut away

I have one on my Onix and by far it is the best I've ridden, it is sadly becoming old and needs changing. What will be a good Selle replacement?

I just bought a Flite. Can't you replace it with that?

Did you play with saddle angle? The forum insists on dead level all the time, but this is not always the case. Try different angles.

thanks for the tip, mine was set at dead level, since performance sells it, I can buy it, try it, if not fitting return it. no loss. Better than the other saddles that had to go on ebay.

Depends on your ass.

For mine, worst seat ever. I replaced mine with a Terry Fly, which I love.

Mine should be here wednesday at the latest. I gave the specialized alias a try for about a week and do not like it one bit. Hopefully the flite is the solution.

works for me too, once I got the angle dialed in. I was surprised, nothing about the shape was visually inviting.

When I was a teen, I loved that saddle. I had one on each of my bikes (track, road, and mountain). Now I'm a little more sensative to numbness (want to have kids in the next 2-3 years) so I am experimenting with its relatives (flite gel, slr gel flow, and maybe flite gel flow if the first two don't work). But hands down, the best lightweight saddle I ever rode on. My fathers San Marco Rolls is a little nicer, but his bike is like a cadillac: heavy and comfy.

Hmm...I hope to never have children so maybe I should try the Flite. In all seriousness, I always thought it was one of the best looking seats but I never got to try one. I have an old Vetta TT vanadium that was fairly light (for the time) and fairly comfy for shorter rides, and my Bertoni came with a steel-railed Turbo saddle that is great, just heavy. I don't care for the huge logo the Flite currently has though. Ok, it's not that huge:

I don't think of them as old school. Brooks saddles are old school .

Even better are the original smooth leathered Flite saddles from the early 90's......I still cherish mine and it is still the most comfortable saddle next to my Brooks...

Sorry, the last thing I read in Bicycling Magazine (10 years ago) said numbness won't affect productivity, but the wife insists that it can't be good to loose feeling there for any length of time, and I wouldn't mind knowing my equipment is still there so I'll consent to her opinion. Besides, it gives me a reason to buy SOMETHING for my bike

I hope it works for you. I find you can't judge a saddle by one ride. I gave up on the flyte after 900 KM, switched to Arione and after quite a few thousand KMs it still feels great. It is a racing saddle so if your riding aggressively I can see how it can cause some problems.

I have a Flite Ti with the Gel insert on my TT bike. Very nice, very comfy. But I use Selle San Marco Ergo Lux on my two road bikes.

I've been riding the same flyte gel saddle for 8 years now. Its pretty nice! I've got regular flyte on my others bikes. I wouldnt say they were the begining of minimalist saddles. My first road bike from the late 70's had a hard plastic 3T saddle (no padding or cover) that is pretty minimal.

+ 1. I have been riding the Flite gel Ti for years. It is the only seat I ride, even on my mountain bikes.

Update for me, I just did 16 miles on an SLR Gel Flow and it surprised me by feeling just as good as my Flite Gel. The thing is tiny, a full inch shorter and 1/2 inch narrower, but it did quite well. I'll be increasing the mileage on it for a while to see how it does. I want to compare with a Flite Gel Flow, but can't find one used. I just might have to buy a new one. After I collect that many saddles, though, would anybody like the "Danielle Special"? I've still got my smooth leather Flite Ti sitting around.

On my road bikes I don't like the flite.
On my Pogliaghi Track frame there is something right about the saddle.
I guess that speaks volumes about rider position on some
saddles as I'm much more in the drops on the track and have a much
higher saddle to bar drop on the Pog.
