Do you wear cycling gloves?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you wear cycling gloves?

The sox thread got me wondering.
Since some folks are bothered by the tan line at the ankle, do you not wear gloves because of the line at the wrist?

No, and not because of tan lines, and neither is that the reason I wear ankle socks.

I started off wearing traditional padded gloves but actually noticed no difference once removed. Granted I have some nice gelled bar tape. The gloves seemed frivolous to me.

Yes, I wear gloves. I like Specialized Grail. They just have a little padding in the center of the palm. I wear them mostly to protect my hands in a fall.

If it's less than about 85 and I'm just riding around, no gloves. Hotter than that and my sweat will make the hoods and bar tape slippery, so I wear gloves. If I'm racing, I'll always wear gloves because the risk of skinning my palms is much higher. Don't really care either way about the tanlines, I spend enough time outside without riding that it's never really noticeable.

I wear team gloves with very little padding. Super-thick padding on gloves ends up cutting off circulation in my hands.

My hands sweat enough that my hoods can get slippery. I wear these Pearl Izumi gloves on most summer rides: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006963QO6..._M3T1_ST1_dp_2

No padding, nice tight fit to my hand, and improve my grip substantially over a bare hand.

Sometimes. I always bring them with now though. Full finger no padding. I've found that having some full finger gloves along can sometimes be a big hand when you have emergency roadside maintenance.

It's too cold to ride without gloves.

I'm in the midst of looking for some heavier ones now.

only when racing, I tend to keep the bike upright, and I find it perfectly comfortable without them. I used to wear them all the time last year, but I kinda got over it this year. never even considered the tan lines.

Only when racing. And then half the time, I forget them so end up racing barehanded anyway.

80% is to wipe snot
15% is for grip - 1 of my bike has quite smooth leather grips
5% is for a bit of padding

in colder weather, obviously for snot & warmth. and these (winter) are also not cycling-marketed gloves. theyre skinny fit general purpose cotton gloves . prefer them to the winter cycling ones i bought

I always wear them. I'd rather ruin a pair of gloves than my hands, a very simple calculation. I've seen proud and boastful no-glove guys go down.

Yes. I like to have a little padding on my hands, but more important for me, they are good for wiping away sweat.

Really should try to avoid landing on your hands anyway. Good way to break a clavicle.

when your front tire slides out in a turn, there's little risk to the clavicle when dragging the hand behind to keep the upper body off the asphalt.

Only when it's cold. I should be wearing some in warm weather after a couple of falls. Having all that skin removed from your palms is no fun at all.

Not often, but they can be nice when you do have a fall. My hands are going to hit the pavement BTW, unless it's too sudden for my reaction. Just not stiff-armed.

I like my palms. I like being able to dress and clean myself. So I wear gloves when I ride.
