Carrefour is nuts, felt like I was walking into a super Walmart, only everything was a little nicer.
Anybody speak good French in here? Fougeres control volunteers posted this today https://www.facebook.com/search/top/...epa=SEARCH_BOX
Hopefully that link works. It says "DISPOSITIF ACCÈS CONTRÔLE AVEC APPLICATION DU PLAN VIGIPIRATE PROPOSEE PAR LA SOUS PREFECTURE DE FOUGERES"
Does vigipirate mean anti-theft? My jacket fell out of my bag in Fougeres and someone absconded with it immediately. Fortunately, the last two days featured good weather.

My french is okay and I found it good enough to muddle through the last time I visited... Sounds like Vigipirate is the French version of terror threat level. I gather from that post that they are basically just controlling access to the control using some sort of plan to combat terrorism threats. On the picture on the facebook page it looks like there are concrete blocks that going to be placed on the road to keep people from driving vans into the control and some soldiers that are going to be keeping an eye on things. I dunno if you noticed soldiers in the train stations and other public places when you were there in France last time but there were lots of them around when I was there and that was way back in 2005 or something. Also on that map they posted it looks like the sleeping building is separate from the main control?

Yes, vigipirate appears to be a neologism, which is why trying to get a translation doesn't work out.
I tried to talk the Editor of the Rusa magazine into reprinting the article about controls from the special issue that was printed for 2011, but that never happened. I think I am going to start a thread about the controls with some of the info.
One of my favorite memories of 2011 was some old folks watching me lose my breakfast outside the Loudiac cafeteria at 3 in the morning. I guess banning spectators from some of the actual controls might not be a horrible idea, but it doesn't seem possible for others. I think they could do it at Loudiac

So I'm reading all about the heat wave in Europe now, even Paris hitting over 40 degrees Celcius. But when I go look at regular weather apps (like Accuweather, Weather Underground, etc), they all appear to be showing "normal" temperatures (e.g. high 24, low 14, and so on), which makes it hard to monitor what's actually going on over there and make plans for it.
Or is there a better app or website to monitor weather and temperatures, or I'm just not looking at the right place?

it was a heat wave. They are back to normal now, or maybe a little hot for them. You have to remember there is no air conditioning in France, and ice is in very short supply. I am not sure they even have fans. So they are ill-equipped to handle temperatures that most of us consider fairly normal for summer. I just checked the 10 day forecast for Fougeres, Carhaix, Loudeac and Sizun and it looks pretty normal now. It will probably be a little colder in August. Definitely taking knee warmers, leg warmers, arm warmers and lightweight long fingered gloves with me. Not sure about the wool long sleeve jersey. Maybe.

Vigipirate is an anti terrorist operation. If you go toa large train station, or an airport, you'll see armed soldiers walking around. That's part of Vigipirate.
I'm in Brittany right now and the weather is quite nice, and the canicule has broken in Paris. but there is no way of knowing what will happen during the PBP, since the weather forecasts I see only go out ten days.

Like sandwiches?
Yes.
That's what I ate at Brest in 2003.

Thanks, Machka, I'll have to check that out.
Just checked the weather in Loudeac, 63F, woah, that's cold. Then I realized it's nighttime. Going out in the heat here, getting more acclimated to it can't be a bad idea

This morning in parts of Brittany it was 10°C (50°F), nice and refresshing after the heat. I needed a long sleeved woolen sweater.

Yes, I just checked my list of control towns, and it looks like lower 50's for all of them. I'm definitely bringing some long sleeve wool

Yeah I plan on packing some layering stuff, been through a lot of rides at 10c or lower. We’re still cooking up here though over 30 last week and high humidity to make it worse. I hope for moderate temperature that’s for sure.

the pattern they are having right now of 4 days of rain followed by 4 days of sun has me somewhat concerned.
