It's typically the first three weeks of April or so. Not all the roads are open, unfortunately. I believe it's just the stretch from Gardiner to West Yellowstone, and one route that comes in from the south. Roads tend to be dry to mostly dry. Depending on the snow level, you can see a lot of wildlife (primarily buffalo and elk) or next to none except in a few spots. (If the snow has melted early, the wildlife goes into the higher elevations.) I've had to stand my ground numerous times at the side of the road while herds or individual bison have passed by in the other lane. The ride can be short (just a brief in and out from either starting point) or long; the Gallatin Valley Bike Club organizes a century ride during that time, and I've heard of multiple groups doing a key swap as they ride from one city to the other. There is only one moderate climb near the middle. Otherwise, the route is not challenging (for a cycling enthusiast).

Weekends are obviously busier but never restrictively so. I've gone during the week and seen almost no one (although the weather was a little cloudy and rainy). If you find yourself in the area, whether it is to see Yellowstone or just southwest Montana as the seasons start to change, it's well worth doing. There's enough to do in West, Gardiner, and nearby Bozeman or Livingston to add to the occasion. Shoot me a PM if you'd like additional details!

I remember being startled by one that was standing behind a tree next to one of the trails. I came off the trail, almost to the parking lot, et voila! There he was, like 3' from me. A bit startling, but he just stood there. Gentle giants. Loved Yellowstone. Riding through it must be heaven.

It's a long story, but it certainly is not intended as a bison deterrent.

Taking a break during a charity ride last October. My buddy and I decided to both ride our 1980's Bianchis (which also explains the throwback Oakleys...kinda).

Cruising my 1975 Gitane Super Olympic across the line at Eroica Gaiole 2018. Despite the hilly extended gravel sections, I had no punctures - not bad for skinny Vittoria tubulars!

[QUOTE=Drillium Dude;11087536]Am I the only one?

When I read postings - especially ones by the regular contributors - I always get an image in my mind what they look like. Sorta like when I read a book: I mentally picture the characters, you know?

Characters...now that describes quite a lot of us here on the Forums!

Anyhow, let's see you guys and gals post some pics of you with your bike(s)! Working on them, riding on them - or just standing there looking proud/happy/confused/goofy/whatever!

I'd hate to scare folks away with my mug. Hard to get a pic of me on a bike since I ride alone.
Posts are not up to Forum requirements for gratuitous visuals, but I'll at least get myself in mirror using a bellows camera to keep it vintage.

Here's me & my De Rosa at 2018 Eroica Japan in Kusatsu. Wish I had trained for this, 'cause the hills were grueling! But definitely the onsens (natural hot spring baths) were my reward!
