It's Just Never Going To Happen

I got the email last night but there is just no way for me to act on it. It's just never going to happen. It's not going to work out for me. I'm going to have to change plans and do something else.

I've been wanting an Acorn Bags roll (black in color) for my black bike. I came across them several months ago but their online store showed everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, was sold out. I sent them an email asking when they would have product in stock. They were nice enough to replay and said they'd send an email in advance of the stock being posted online. Great!

I've gotten that heads up email several times since then. I got one last night, too. The stock went up at 9AM PST this morning. The thing is, I work every day. There's no way I can get online at exactly 9AM to buy a silly bag ("silly" relative to the importance of my work). I missed out on the last few sales and I expect I will miss the next few sales as well. Basically, this prodicut is not available for me to buy.

I'm going to have to do something else, something other than an Acorn tool roll. It's too bad, too, as the product looks really, really nice.

They are nice enough to email you but won't let you pre-order a bag?

Yep, they are nice and no pre-orders. But keep checking, sometimes people put them into the shopping cart and remove them later in the day and "bingo" ya got a bag. It's happened twice for me and I love them both, a tool roll in tan and a handlebar bag in black. Keep trying, you'll get one.

Is it that hard to ask someone to be online in your stead at 9a? Does no one love you, Mike?

FAQs about Acorn's ordering process.

https://www.acornbags.com/orderingquestions.html

Again, I love Acorn products.

But, there are great alternatives, such as the Black Rose tool roll.

$20.

or, they have a saddle roll in tons of colors.

$69.

Located in Duluth, MN.

They will make any color you want Mike.

Probably tomorrow.

They claim the more popular ones sell out in 30 seconds.
It's a husband and wife that make these bags so they only put up about eight at a time.

Sadly, this is a dead accurate statement. I waited until the 9 am posting, clicked the button right on the hour and -- CRAP! Already sold out! This happened three times over the spring months. I finally began to look around a bit more carefully (rather than the roll bag, I was looking for a front rando bag instead) and came across Swift Industries (disclaimer: no relation, etc.), a small outfit where each and every bag is custom made to the customer's color spec. The wait time was a couple of months and mine just arrived last week... but I've got the bag. Otherwise, I was just getting completely frustrated with Acorn. Great that they have the kind of reputation that this is problem though.

I really admire that kind of operation, but it makes it tough to be a customer.

I decided I'm going to make one, to fit on my new VO Constructeur rack. Combination tool roll and spare tube/tubular holder. Probably leather.

Weird...I never have a problem ordering one when they say they are going on sale... I have ordered (4) of the Medium Saddlebags, (3) of the Tubular Bags, and (1) of the Medium Handlebar Bags.

Oftentimes they say 9am and it ends up being 9:15 or 9:30 or...

Obviously if you can't hang on the computer its all a moot point.

Indeed, Zaphod makes a nice tool roll. I like having a tool roll and some other small bag. I'll have a Sackville tool roll when they're back in stock.

Don't mention it.

I am going to have them make a small bag for the custom rack I am having built for my John Hollands.

I really like the idea of custom sizes, colors, and features.

From their blog, I get the impression they actually use the products they sell.

I like that as well.

I know that Acorn has a great reputation when it comes to their bags, but I will never have one because I refuse to go to that much trouble to give someone my business. I refuse to wait for an hour to eat at a restaurant, and I refuse to sit at my PC for hours to order a product from Acorn.

Carradice makes a high quality and affordable roll of the type you want. And you can actually get one.

They are a very small company.

I happen to think they have a good, manageable business model.

I've managed to order quite a few items for myself and our riding group, with very little or no bother.

But, as you state, many folks have very little patience.

.....and we do have choices.
