Awesome, way to go. I know the feeling, I am getting back into riding and did a 3-miler today and was beat. Keep at it so you don't have to go through the rough part of starting again.

Glad you didn't go down when the hub failed... That alone made it a lucky day!
You'll be back at it soon!
Congrats on the first ride!

Sorry about the bike failure, OP, but congrats on staying focused and committed! You're dead right: it's just a bike, so get another!
I'm expecting you'll have good success getting fit, and my best wishes to you!

Congrats on staying focused!
And you'd be amazed how much you can lose in the early going when you start measuring your calorie intake. (It does take more than just exercise). I lost the first 80 lbs in the first few months. Currently from 341 to 225 and still headed 'downward'. The reality is, and step one is sucking it up and admitted it; we were/are obese because we ate way too much. And way too much of the wrong foods (sugary stuff, fried stuff, trans fats, etc.) When we cut out calorie intake down to a healthy level; the pounds just fly off because the body has become so accustomed to an incredible amount of calorie intake. Eventually it does slow down; but it doesn't stop if you keep it up. And continue to calculate caloric intake. I eat 1640 calories a day and am still losing about a pound and a half a week. When I started, I was eating something like 2,400 calories and losing 3-7 pounds a week!
You can do it man! I didn't start with cycling; I started with running. But I remember my first run. I had already lost a lot of weight just from calorie intake (about 100 pounds to that point); I put on some tennis shoes and shorts, walked outside. Stretched, walked for a bit, then opened up a nice run. Had a GPS app going on my phone. Not a sprint, just a nice little jog. I went up and down my road. My chest was pounding, lungs burning, legs shaking. I got home, I looked at my app. I had run 0.27 miles at a 14:30/mile pace Now, I'm still not anywhere near fast, but I can run a 10 minute mile; follow it up with a 12:30 mile, and then power walk another mile at 15 minutes. Then do squats and lunges and core workouts. THEN hop on the recumbent bike at the gym and do a 20 minute HIIT workout!

Congrats and great job on just getting yourself out there. A few years ago I could barely make it around the block, I just did my first 100k this weekend. Keep it easy and consistent.

4 years ago I got back on the bike after a 15 years (and ??? lbs). I almost threw up after 2 miles. Yesterday I was trying to figure out which century rides (yes, plural) I wanted to sign up for, and planning for my first 200k brevet. Keep at it and you'll be there in no time.
I will echo what others have said - exercise has kept me healthier and in better shape - my diet has changed my weight. Although some overlap, I don't think it's much.
