Nice score! I saw that one on craigslist for a little while, seemed like a good price.

Nice frameset. 58cm frame should be SLX.

Here's the geometry.

I looked at for a while price kept dropping picked it up for 200

It was already spread for a 130 with downtube adapters installed and I will have some old dura ace brifters and will make it a 20 speed

It has a cane creek headset threadless stem conversion on the bike now and I will keep it that way and go with a modern cockpit

I have a full 600 gruppo and will use it to build the bike for the rest. I think I will lose the biopace and set it up like a compact

so it will not be a vintage build more of a frakenbike with some modern elements and some vintage

should be a sweet ride

thanks for the specs

Robbie, I think it's Emerald Green. Even though that color isn't listed in the '86 catalog, it's a dead ringer for my Emerald Green '87 (now Ferrari Red).

As received from the seller:

I would agree that it is green.

I like the Emerald Green name I have some yellow tires and will now be labeled the Oz bike

I need a little help.

There is an eyelet that holds the rear derailleur cable. It appears to need a special insert. Is this the case or just the normal end caps like I have now are ok? If a special part is needed what is it called and where is it available.

The frame was spread before does this look racked or is this ok

should be done tonight

Yes, your RD cable stop on the right chainstay needs a special cable end step down ferrule which fits into the braze on. It is sort of a cable end cap with a nipple. Loose Screws list two possibilities at the 8th and 9th listing on this page. Whether they will fit your Paramount frame or not, I cannot say.

I've been very fortunate to not have misplaced the one on my '83 Paramount. Notice how they moved it from on top of the stay to under the stay on your frame?

Have a nearly identical 86 I bought new in the fall of 87. Built it with a mix of 7400 and later modified to 7403 8speed Dura Ace. Has been an awesome, companion thru the years. Believe cold dead hands will be involved with our separation!

ZOMBIE THREAD!!!!

I never did follow up with the final build. I made some changes over the years and it is set up pretty sweet. It is a pleasure to ride and very comfortable. It has a glide type feel. I thought the 58 might be big but really like the ride. It is by far the most comfortable bike I own or have owned. It really soaks up road noise. It really rides well in the drops and very steady on decents

Nice. The Waterford made Paramounts are very sought after. The Japanese made ones were nice as well, but don't seem to have the current panache of the Waterfords.

I was riding my PDG one today to the fastest avg pace of my 25 mile route for the year. My 1987 Waterford is currently listed for sale locally as I truly prefer the performance of the PDG. Guess that says which one I consider better, LOL!

actually the serial number. I think you can buy decals

perhaps I am wrong but as I understand it

580C WB 86271

The 580 is frame size 58 but is really a 57.5

C is the fork for the bike I think as it can also mean 650C but clearly 700C frame

W is Waterford Built

B is for February

86 is 1986

271 is the 271st frame built that month

At least that's how I understand it.

Emerald Green was a 87 color but I think this was a factory direct order because the owners name was painted on the frame thus the custom color for that year

I could be wrong

Paramount custom Emerald Green color

In response to Gallo's post, the Emerald Green may have been an '87 color, but I also have an '86 in fact also a 58 and the color is Emerald Green same as yours. I bought mine from Bike America in Sacramento, CA off the shelf in Sept of '87 at a discount price being a previous years frame. Looked at the '87 catalog and the bottom color shown for the Paramounts looks to be the Emerald Green. I have no explanation for all this, but may be an excuse for some research.

There are lots of model year inconsistencies in any manufacturer's offerings. I have a Bianchi with 1982 components, a 1981 serial number, and a color not listed in either year's catalog.

I was struck by the Schwinn's steep seat tube angle, even in the "touring" version. Since the head angle is conventional/traditional at around 72 to 73 degrees, it should work out well, if you can slide the saddle back far enough or get a seat post with enough offset.
