Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Inexpensive Jerseys - Many to Choose From - Any Opinions / Known Differences?

I am looking for a plain style riding jersey. Currently, I just wear a walmart polyester sport shirt but it does not have pockets and on a few longer rides coming up, I think pockets and less flapping in the wind would be beneficial.

Here is what I have come up with. Any opinions on differences, quality, best value, etc.

THANKS

Look for a Demarchi Contour Plus jersey -- can often be found new on eBay, and at discount (around $50) from places like Nashbar. More money than the jerseys you have listed, but very very nice quality and fit, and very durable.

Uh oh. now you've gone and done it. Pricepoint guy will dig this thread up in 3 years just say "thanks for thinking of us".

Of course, this will be defensable as "I just wanted to make sure our public was responded to".

I have this exact jersey. I pulled it off a sale rack as winter was starting for 19.99. I'm really impressed with it. I'm not saying it's the best jersey I own, but very good quality for $20.

The biggest problem with cheap jerseys is that they generally have a very boxy cut, so they will not be as comfortable as a nicely contoured pro jersey. A loose jersey will flap in the wind and not wick very well. On the other hand, if you are seriously overweight, then you're not going to fit in a pro jersey.

Good point and that is part of the reason I choose the Carari as some of the reviews/comments said it was a little more of a relaxed fit. I need that as I am overweight by about 20lbs but still am in the process of loosing. Last 25lbs in the last 5 months and have another 20 to go.

Price vs Value jerseys

It's great to have another rider and that you are upgrading your gear. Years ago, I started by wearing cotton tee shirts and jean shorts. As I got more into riding I upgraded to the $20 jerseys you mentioned. The one concern I have with those low cost jerseys is the quality of the material, dyeing and stitching. You can get a closeout pro jersey for about $28. This would be a well made jersey with good stitching and the color process makes them look good after many, many washes. Some of my favorites are over 10 years old. I threw away my $20 jerseys and $30 shorts from the mail order catalogs long ago due to these quality issues. Just my opinion.

I got a Belwether jersey on e-bay for something in the low $20 range, and I love it.
