taking the rear wheel off

I know you should be in the smallest gear on the cassette. Should I also be in the small chainring?

According to Sheldon Brown: "Derailer Gears Derailer gears look as if they would be the hardest, but are actually the easiest type of rear wheel to remove and re-install! The trick is to shift to the smallest (outermost) rear sprocket before loosening anything. This gets the derailer as far out of the way as possible. (It doesn't matter where the front derailer is.)"
