Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pfffftt. Can't ride. Random post.

It's a great weather day, and I've been riding in all sorts of heat, humidity, rain, and storms. And with work/husband/kid schedule commitments I can't get out for a ride. Grrrrrrrrr.

So here I am, trolling around with you fine folks. And I've been thinking about some random stuff on my solo rides lately and have been wondering:

What creatures do you see when you're out on the road (of the non-human variety), and do you talk to them?

and...

What songs get in your head (without the iPod) when you're climbing, and do you sing out loud?

Told you it was random. Answer or not. Thank you for entertaining me.

I usually apologize to road kill and the "circus" music is always running through my head when I ride.

see lots of deer, squirrels, javelina (small pig like animals), and the occasional snake.

Usually try to pay attention to the road so I try to not listen to the voices in my head too much

I always moo at the cows.

And, if I get a song stuck in my head, it's often a worst-case Raffi type scenario.

Almost ran over a badger on the bike path yesterday. I told it to get the hell out of the way.

Yesterday it was an Iron Maiden tune. Can't remember which. Yep.

On a local MUP I've seen everything from deer to turkey to snapping turtles. But when I'm on the road I usually just see a lot of dead creatures. Make sure you hold your breathe when you go by.

A couple days ago on a solo ride I passed the ice cream man. That damn song was ringing in my head the whole way home.

Coyotes are common where I live, as are horses. The coyotes I make loud noises to chase them away. The horses I usually make "horsey" noises - the classic, "click, click" mouth sound, to loud exhalations through flapping lips.

Road kill is also common. I learned first hand the other day that a racoon after one day in the sun will smell much worse by a factor of 10.
