A lurker no more...

Greetings! I finally decided to join today, after several months of lurking about...

A few months ago, my girlfriend Trish had gotten a bug in her head about riding bikes together. I was more than a little leery of the idea. My main concern was that I wasn't sure I could get a bike that would hold me. Well, at least one within my price range (I had found the bikes on supersizedcycles... whoa!). At the time, I was in the neighborhood of 350 pounds. I had recently started a modified fasting program, and was losing weight (down from my max of 365), but I was still sure any bike I tried would fold up under me. A little more searching around the 'net led me to this forum. And what an eye opener it was.

Fast forward to today. I'm down to 305, and loving every minute I can get on the bikes. Yes, that's "bikes" with an "s", as I've developed a serious case of N+1 disease. Trish says only half-jokingly that the garage is starting to look like a bike shop. Damn you, Craigslist!

This past Saturday, Trish and I, and her father and brother, took the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail from Rosendale to New Paltz (NY) and back. By my mapping, we covered 15.2 miles (https://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ne...24978675756371). I'm reasonably sure that's the longest single stretch of distance I've ever covered under my own power, and I'm pretty damn proud of it.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge and experience, and for the inspiration to get me rolling again.

Welcome. I had the same worries when I started over 3 years ago, but the people here helped me gain enough confidence to buy a bike. Well, it has folded up underneath me yet.

Hello, and welcome! I understand about the N+1 syndrome. I have however been sternly warned by my wife that two is enough. Unless of course I get her a new bike at the same time. So I guess you could say It's more like N+2 around my house.Oh well. Any way, thanks for saying hi.

New Paltz has some nice scenery. I always thought the cut sandstone in the river was pretty cool. Welcome to the forum Lunk

One way to get around that is to keep some in a state of disassembly! My wife thinks I have two bikes, when in reality I have four and a half. She just doesn't quite equate a wheel here, and a pile of parts on the bench, and a frame in the corner, to a whole bike!
