Hi everyone!

I have been lurking on the boards for a couple of weeks now thought I would intorduce myself. My name is Jason and I live outside of Waco, TX. I am 6' 2" and 325. My wife and I have decided that it is past time to get ourselves into shape. My 7 year old daughter loves to ride her bike so I thought this would be a great way to get into shape and be able to spend some quality time with my girl!

Waco is known for the hike and bike trails at Cameron Park. I have always wanted to try the trails out so I decided to go with a mountain bike. I went to the LBS on Saturday and put a down payment on a bike that I am really excited about! I got the Specialized P1 AM. It was at a reasonable price and the salesman thought it would be the best fit for me.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Piper - WELCOME!

Hint: Never second guess a bike purchase. Just go wth the flow, ride it and later, if you get the "bug" trade up. That's the fun part! Defintely get the family involved, especially the young one. Never too late or early for the kids to know how important is exercise. Plue she will figure out how much her daddy loves her because he is doing something to keep his heart healthy. Enjoy!

The main thing is not to get frustrated. I was excited when I first started but that quickly waned when I found I could only do 1-3 miles per outing before getting tired and winded. It has taken me several years of on again/off again before last year I finally got full well into cycling and lost a LOT of weight.

Know that it's perfectly OK to start out very slow, with short distances...and definitely keep your family involved, they will keep you motivated. And as kenkayak said don't judge your progression by the day, or even the week. Judge it by the month, or even the year. You might be like me and it might take a few years before you realize just how great this sport is...but don't give up! You're starting into one of the best things life has to offer...cycling.

There will be the inevitable frustrations that come with being a clyde starting out with cycling, but always remember...it's never "I can't...", it is always "I currently struggle with..."
