Clyde Century times

Doing my first century saturday. State your height, weight, and time it took you to do your first century and your fastest century time if you've done more than one.

Edit: After posting this I was reminded that there was a similar thred on this but nobody was giving specifics about their size. As clydes we run the gamut so it would be great if people posted here and informed us of their stature as well as their times. heck, even post what bike you did it on.

Hmm, my thread down the page isn't good enough? Oh well!

First century was at 230 lbs 5:30 (Amtrak Century)...easy century

Fastest hill century at 220 lbs (Ride Around The Bear, nearly 10,000 ft) ..........7:10 ride time/ 7:40 total time at 220 lbs.

I've done about 35 centuries. 4 on the tandem with the wife, about 8 hours. The remaining centuries were 90% solo, anywhere from 5:45- 6:30. If I ride with other riders, it's usually a slower ride time.

sorry, not sure i saw the thread you mentioned, I'll take a look. Sounds like i need to set my goals higher based on the times you are showing. It's hard to tell, I did 75 miles 2 weeks ago but the last 25 miles it started raining so i slowed the pace quite a bit. yesterday i did a 40 mile training ride with 5500 feet of climbing in it as my last tough workout before the century. I did that in a shade over 3 hours and that gets slowed down a lot because the first 5 miles are riding through nyc traffic. originally my goal was sub 7 hours but I think I can bump it up to 6 hours. I did 75 in 4:45 4:15 ride time. The 2 rest stops I made the first one was to eat breakfast since the ride started so early. the 2nd one was in the middle of the rain and I waited extra time hoping it would stop. I'm hoping to really minimize my time at the rest stops, especially since I'm riding solo.

Well it's an old thread that someone revived, so it may be time for a new and improved thread!

Yeah, rain sucks! I did the same mtn century last year. I was well prepared but it drizzeled/lite rain and heavy fog (30 yard visibility) for the first 30 miles of the lower slopes. By the end of the ride, I was 30 minutes down from my best time.

Here is the link to the thread https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...astest-Century

A quote that I saw Clifton use that he attributed to a riding partner is "you can either be fast on the ride or efficient in rest stops" that is a paraphrase. But, I like the idea.

Current Ht: 6' 3"
Current Wt: 260 lbs.
First Century: 12:30 (1988 Assault on Mt. Mitchell, one of the hardest centuries in the U.S.)
Fastest Century: 4:05 (2009 Sunrise Century, Clarksville, Tennessee, one of the flattest & fastest centuries in the U.S.)

These times are total elapsed time, not just riding time. I did both centuries at probably the same weight. In 1988, I had just come off playing college football. I ballooned up and since have dropped back down over the past 3-4 years back to that football-playing weight. In 2008, I re-did the Assault on Mt. Mitchell, finishing in 8:44.

(Bus ride down the mountain is 1 hour and 55 min including a 15 min break to cool off the breaks after going down the steep grade)

I am still a virgin at 100 miles

Srarted riding again Feb of 2010 after 10 years. Start weight at 282 current weight 267
Since my reintroduction I have had three attemps at riding a centuary

First one ended after 14 hours on the road with the sherriff having to take me back to the vehicle ( no support) I made 80 miles that day

Second attempt was with support I made 93 miles in 16 hours ( my support was off doing shopping and bathroom breaks when i had flats). my weight was 276lbs with camelbak 315lbs

Third attempt was a local 52 mile loop. Bike and all weighed out at about 309lbs. The first two hours i averaged 10.1 mph. then bonked even with energy drinks and hydration total average droped to 8.3 MPH. Did not start the second loop. Dew point was 76 degrees with a temp in the 90's. Had a new saddle less pressure on the private parts but my sit bones got sore.

Months ago i signed up to a 100 mile Tour de cure at this point i wont be able to make the 10:am cut off at the 30 mile mark. I would be redirected to the 62 mile poop (loop)Woops! I didn't correct that because when i reread it it was just too funny. If nothing else i will be pooped after 62 miles

I am also over 55 years, very old 6 feet. ride a 60 cm Mercier Corvus, Trek 1420 tripple, Globe

I will keep training. I now have an indoor trainer, cooler weather, garmin 305, have signed on with New Leaf for a fat burning training program. I now have the gear to get me to my life long goal of 100 miles. ( except a jersey)

Not downhill . Harder than it looks, though. Here's the profile:

Thanks. I was actually hoping for an even better time so I wasn't overly excited about it. It was a Very Hot day. First place rider was 30-mins off last year's time. Organizers said they usually get 10% dropping out (900 out of 1,000 finish) but due to the heat, we had a 25% dropout rate (only 700-ish finished out of 1,000+). Here's the profile:

Meh, they didn't stop to cool off the brakes. Probably in there just in case. Worst part was these buses are built for tiny-people. Had to ride them to our football games in college, too.

Fastest century 100 miles 3,000 feet climbing 240lbs 6'1" Total time 6:50

First century was the Hotter-n-Hell 100. I don't know what I weighed then. I'm at about 223 now, was 285 when I started, and that was somewhere in between. Took about 10 hours, including the half-hour wait to get started.
Second was a self-supported trip in Duval County, took about 12 hours as I recall.
Then there was a 107-mile permanent, don't remember how long that took. Comparable to my other rides, at least.
Then did HHH again, used the chip timer, was at 8:58, included fixing a flat.
Did the HHH this year, chip time was 7:06. Mainly due to moving from a single-speed cruiser to a faster bike.
And have done about a dozen 200k's with times ranging from 9:10 to over 12:30 or so.

In regards to time off the bike- I understand the statement, but in a lot of cases, my time off the bike was time I NEEDED to be off the bike. It was rest, not just random time-wasting.

I managed to make it through two centuries so far. The first one was at about 310lbs. (I'm 6'3" & 26 years old.) The more recent one at about 295lbs. I did both on the same EZ3 USX HD Trike. It weighs about 70lbs., plus I carry a lot of extra gear - about 30-40lbs. of tubes, floor pump, 6 water bottles, tools, etc.

I did both in almost the exact same time. About 9 hours on the nose. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. It was almost 9 flat to the second each time. And they were similar, but different rides. Both used the Schuylkill River Trail, but one turned North up the Perkiomen Trail - the more recent went into Center City Philadelphia and back.

5'8 225 pounds, weighed the same for both of my centuries.

First was a ride time of 6:45, total time of about 7 1/2.
Second was a ride time of 6:34 with a total time of close to 8 hours.

I'm curious what my time might be if I just buckled down and rode one solo at my own pace. I may try that this weekend, if the opportunity presents itself.

My fastest century was was 6 hours even of seat time. It had 3500 feet of elevation gain. I did get one section where a few Clydes got together and formed a pace line, but mostly a solo ride. I have another century this weekend where a bunch of us are going to ride together. The group has some strong riders in it, so it should be a good time.

Yup. That was my ride partner Albert, with the Seattle Randos. I had a bad tendency to dawdle at the controls until the 300k this spring when Geoff (one of the k-hounds in our group) asked me at a control he was volunteering if I was waiting for my bike to grow roots. I started picking up my pace at the control stops after that, but Albert was seriously not having any of my "10 minutes for lunch" crap: In, buy food, hit the head, back on the bikes. Eat while you ride. Go, go, go!

That said, I'm 230-ish when I'm in peak season and I ride a heavy Surly Cross Check with heavy CR-18 wheels, 32mm tires, steel fenders, and canvas luggage front and rear. All said and done, the bike (with empty luggage) is 28 pounds before I load water and gear on it. Heading out on a 200km solo, it's usually closer to 33 pounds.

I haven't kept track of century times for a while since my "short" rides for the club are mostly 200km. My fastest recent century (supported) was 6h 08m total time on a course with 6200' of climbing. My fastest 200k (125mi) is 8h 29m total. That works out to 6h 47m for the first 100 miles on a solo ride with no street markings and no support.

My average finish for a 200k is more like 9h 30m to 10h, or somewhere around 7h 30m to 8h for the first 100 miles.

My first and only century ride so far was The Wright Stuff Century Ride in Mt. Horeb, WI this year. 101.5 miles in 7:23. There were some pretty challenging hills on that ride.

5:36:32 at the 2010 Sunrise Century (Clarksville, TN). Not hot like the 2009 ride because a cold front was blowing through that day but man was it windy. 6'2" about 298 at the time of the ride.

@mkadam did you ride the Sunrise Century this year?

This is the vision I get of a clydes pace line. At least you get a draft.

I haven't done a century yet, either, so I can't post a time, but I do want to offer an idea to the OP. I suggest that you don't set a time goal, just a goal to finish. What if you finish but don't make your time goal? You will have finished your first century and FAILED. Horrible. Better to have something to celebrate, at least for the first one.
