The Monstrosity Thus Far

So, update on the frame I'm building. Not nearly done yet, and progress has been slow. Been ordering parts online for the drive train, but the entire frame has been built from scratch, using only the materials I have at hand.

--------------------------------------
The frame in profile (and currently upside down):

--------------------------------------
Frame Rear (with Samagaga differential)

--------------------------------------
Frame Front

--------------------------------------
Rear fork (left) and Front fork (right)

The front fork is in an L shape due to the stresses and parts of steering. There are two of each, but I figured showing just these was sufficient.

--------------------------------------
Parts for Double Wishbone Suspension

These haven't been welded together yet.

--------------------------------------
Rear Suspension Parts

These will be used in the manner shown in the picture of the model:

And these are the studs that will hold them in place:

Yes the holes are off-center. The jig was just a couple pieces of metal clamped to the drill press table.

Hey, I can only use the tools I have.

You intend to pedal this thing? That is going to weigh a ton.

Yes I intend to pedal this thing (as a four-wheeler, adding a motor of any kind opens up a can of worms I don't want to deal with). The frame weighs in the vicinity of 100 lbs right now, so I have about 1900 lbs leeway left.

Hopefully it will meet the local road load limits when finished! Interested in seeing the final form as it looks like a seriously fun project. Really appreciate the "materials on hand" commitment. Requires ingenuity and resourceful thinking.

Update: Since my last post, I have made not a lick of progress on it. But I am changing a few things. Mostly, the back is changing. Instead of the complicated rear suspension I had in mind, I'll do something more akin to a car: a small frame holding the axle attached to leaf springs. The "flair" at the back end is going to be cut down, and the metal I get from it will be used to fix the back end. The front suspension will remain the same.

Right now, I'm just kicking myself for not buying the hubs and other parts I would need to build this thing. Maybe one day, I'll get this thing on the road.

If it never sees the road it really is no big deal. The joy of designing and bringing some of it to life from paper to working rig is worth the effort.

I'm going to feel robbed if this never gets built up and ridden

But I've had absolutely no joy in designing or building this thing. I've hated just about every minute, especially near where I finally left off because the only think I could think of is how completely screwed up the whole thing was and how idiotic my design was from the get-go. And if I repeated what I was calling myself during the building process, I'd end up on the Banned Users list.

Oh, that is bad, really bad. No joy, no fun, what is the point? Are you learning anything? If not, scrap it and move on.

It was meant to be a commuter vehicle, as I live only 6 miles from work. But I have really high expectations of myself, and that's really kicked me in the rear while building it.
