Adhesive and a cable stop
As an experiment I glued cable guides and a cable stop to a frame. The guides are holding strong as there really is no stress placed upon them, but the derailleur stop pulled away from the adhesive. The adhesive is JB Weld and has stuck to the chain stay, but not the stop. It may be the stop was not clean enough, but really don't know.
Moral of the story is braze stops on or rivet and glue, but not just an adhesive alone.

I authorized some repairs on f 16s using a Devcon metal filled epoxy. Big brother of JB Weld.
But you need a decent amount of surface area to make it work well.

I was going to reply when this thread first posted about it's all in the design. How much strength does the joining process have per contact area. For years I've joked that one could make a bike out of stryrofoam and bubble gum. You'd just need to use a whole lot of it Andy (whose jaw hurts from the thought of all that gum)

Maybe true in shear but above BB shell guides can see a lot of tensile stress on them, Enough to bend them during hard use. But this reply begs the question "what's a guide?" This is not a real question but more a comment about terms and their sometimes vague meaning. Andy

It is easy for me to understand why early bonded frames had a high failure rate. Even the OCLV frames had trouble with the glue sticking the BB shell in the frame. It is an exacting science, not suited for JB Weld. Intake manifolds do OK, though!
