1981 Colnago Super
My friend built this Colnago way back in the day, when he worked on campus at the UC Santa Barbara bike shop. "I certainly didn't have the means for an all Campy set up, but I put a lot of effort into choosing more affordable quality components. I'm ready to trade it to a business friend - he's a winemaker. I want to make a fair trade, so I'd appreciate your help valuing it. Condition is EXC+, very very low miles."
Here's the parts list: ~1981 Colnago Super 53cm. Colnago blue, full chrome fork with Colnago cut out on crown. Columbus tubing (non-SL, I believe).
Full braze-ons, except front derailleur. Colnago cut out BB shell.
* Cinelli Campione del Mondo 63-38 bars
* Cinelli 1R hidden bolt stem 100mm
* Campy SR (alloy) headset
* Campy seatpost binder bolt
* Japanese SL bottom bracket, Dura Ace?
* Titanium BB bolts (very cool at the time)
* Campy SR crank arms 170mm
* Avocet (Campy SR copy) 42/52 chainrings
* Shimano Dura Ace seatpost
* Avocet RS saddle, faded
* Black Silca frame fit pump, Campy metal pump head!
* Suntour Superbe brakeset, needs rubber hoods, not available
* Suntour Superbe rear derailleur, Cyclone front, braze on shifters
* Suntour Superbe pedals, black cages, sealed bearings
* Wheelset #1 - trainers Fiamme red, 3x, 36 stainless DT straight spoke. Shimano 6-speed hubset.

Surprised nobody has chimed in on this.
This bike is very nice. Paint is just beautiful with few chips or scratches for its age. All it looks like it needs is a new set of tires, but other than that, she looks ready to roll.
Some nice components, but I think the mix will hold back value. And the tubing should be SL, which all Supers used.
I'd say this is a $1000 bike all day long. Very nice!

That is a nice bike. The mixing of parts diminishes value a little and the vintage bike market has been a little flat for the past year or so. Look up the sold prices for Supers on eBay and subtract 10-15% for an idea of a value for a local sale. I got my ‘82 Super with Campy SR for about $500 but there was a bit of inside deal BF discount involved. I think $1000 might be pushing it a little, but a fair starting point.
One thing to look into. A Dura Ace BB spindle is going to have a different taper than a Campy one and might cause some problems with the tapers on the crank. Look up some threads on JIS vs Campagnolo and ISO tapers.

I think you're quite right about this, but I'm stretching back into my memory. Possibly it is a different spindle in a Japan BB. In any case you've jogged my memory. Cheers.

'81 in my view had Colnago coming out of their "dark" period. Great color, decent size. If the fork chrome is good, there is the biggest part of the value. Repaint not necessary.
I don't like the foil chain slap sticker, (as I said, dark period) And I don't like the too far forward stamping of the COLNAGO on the chainstay, was corrected later.
$1,000 is about right, and don't bother doing any more overhauling. A buyer would no doubt exchange the parts for Campagnolo. When built, they still ruled the Peloton.
Those bars look more 66 than 63 bend to my eye...

Yep, $1000. Super as the Superbe parts are, these days they actually deduct for this Colnago.... strictly in terms of valuation.
This bike needs non Japanese components, rather suggest all Campagnolo.
That said, I purchased new in 1982 a Super frameset and slowly built over a period of time with select components. As customary back then it was a mix of Campagnolo AND Suntour Superbe with the hot setup Modolo brakes. That bike later stolen.
I currently have a '79 Super in the same color as the OP. It came in its original configuration with Campy, Zeus AND Superbe brakes and pedals. I swapped out the Japanese parts and added some custom reworked Campagnolo bits.
Awesome classic. Defined as the all around road race machine, very neutral and confident handling. Many others copied Ernesto's, Super geometry.
