Fuji “The Finest” with some surprise upgrades

Dura-ace brakes.

Chrome!

I’ve been working towards buying this bike for about 3 weeks. The original owner bought it when it was about 2 years old. He has taken amazing care of it over the years, and it was ridden... a lot! There have been a few upgrades over the years. Any new parts were considerable upgrades over the OEM parts. The tubulars were replaced with clinchers and Weyless hubs, very nice! Dura Ace brakes, Cinelli stem and cyclone Gt derailleur.

It's no surprise to see some of the finest stuff on a bike that nice!

It's the little things, like the cutouts in the cable clips, and even the shiny dropout adjusters...

Wow, what a beauty. Perfect build IMO.

Sort of what I'm going for with my Sports Tourer build, but a little less racy and a little more randonneur.

I have always liked the shade of dark blue that Fuji used. I bought a Royale in 1980 in the same color. Some day I hope to have another blue Fuji.

I didn’t even notice the cutouts in the cable clips, cool! I think the fork crown is pretty swanky. The lugs are super short. Kind of surprising.

Yeah, the blue is pretty. I assume the chrome under the paint plays a role in the color.

Yes, The Finest had a chromed frame. As I remember, the painted areas had a rougher chromed finish in order to accept paint.

This bike is beautiful. Is this the guy near you who used to own a shop (or worked in a shop) who also had a Fuji America for sale?

Very cool! I once grabbed on of those in the 63cm size (too big for me) and the front fork was bent outward, like someone went off a jump with it. I sold the frame sans fork but remeber how light the frame & fork felt after I broke the bike down. I never weighed it but it seemed very much on the light side.

Yeah! How did you know that! He sold the America already. He worked at Goldy’s which is no longer around. He was local to me, about a 5 minute drive. Nice guy. He shared a bunch of stories about rides he had done on the Fuji.

Because I was going to have you help me facilitate the sale of the Fuji America . . .

Lol! Yeah, I remember that. His ad has been up for a while. I don’t think it had photos or a price. I went to look at the bicycle without any money expecting the worst. I was really blown away by the condition. I really like the weyless hubs too, very smooth! Anyway, we agreed on a price and I started a small sell off. I sold my prized cyclone GT rear derailleur... which hurt. It eased the pain knowing the Fuji had a cyclone GT.

K6K is November 1971 build. The seat post looks like it might be stock. Is it dated?

The Fuji Bicycles - Indentification by Serial Number, Catalog, Model and History 1971-1991 site appears to be dying. Here is the serial info for this format from a google cache of that page:

6 indicates the year based on the Showa calendar. In this case Showa calendar year 46 is indicated as 6, which equals Western calendar 1971. If it was 7 that would equal a 1972. 8 would equal a 1973. In 1975 this format changed to the 2-digit western calendar year in the serial number.

The 3rd digit 'K' in the serial number is the month. Month A is January, Month G is July.

The 1st digit 'K' in the serial number is likely the manufacturing facility.

Can anyone else confirm that the links at Fuji Bicycles - Indentification by Serial Number, Catalog, Model and History 1971-1991 appear to be broken? I might create a separate post to archive some of this info.

Man... I was way off. The fork crown on mine is different than all of the catalog images and the decal set only matches 1976 and up. I wonder if they built a whole bunch of frames early on, then sold them years later? Maybe they were similar to Raleigh with catalogs that were mostly just suggestions.

Weyless hubs with the original skewers. Very nice.

You showed the Cinelli stem but which bars does it have? Cinelli of that vintage were 26.4 stem/bar clamp diameter so if the bar does not match you might have slippage problems.

I think they are Nitto, not sure which model, probably Olympiad which would be 25.4. Good call, I will have to check it out. The previous owner worked at a bike shop and seemed very knowledgeable so it would be surprising. I think I have some Nitto brand shims in my stash somewhere. I purchased the shims by mistake. I suppose I was just planning ahead without realizing it.
