Ouch, I'm sorry that happened. Sometimes, it's like a bike has a bulls eye on it or something!

That's quite possibly the most interesting way I've ever seen someone try to remove cotters. I know they're a pain in the ass, but you just need the correct tool!

I'm trying to see in my mind how it might have been locked at an angle with the front wheel over the curb and then a car backed into it. I think the back wheel would be bent the other way tho.

Back in college one morning we all came out to grab our bikes to ride to class. 30+ bikes that were locked up in the bike rack outside the Dorm were all mangled overnight like that including my Raleigh 3 speed.

To me it looks like someone hit it from the back and pushed it toward the signpost, inflicting the damage on the rear and the crank. Notice how the crank matches the flat post. And how the rear dropout is flattened toward the curb.
Can't figure out what happened to the front.

I had a high school summer job at a fairly high end beach club restaurant. I got off work one night around 11:30 to see the front wheel of my bike badly mangled. The next day I told the maitre d' about it, and he told me one of the regular customer/members had confessed to being drunk while trying to back his car out of a parking space and going forward and jumping the curb, instead. The customer gladly covered more than the cost of my wheel rebuild.

The back caliper was badly bent or I think they would have been salvaged already. It had basically been stripped of anything useful and was awaiting the garbage truck. I took the brake pads and said a little prayer for the rider, assuming there was one*. I guess I could have taken the chainrings but I was on a ride and I don't have any 110 cranks.
* [edit] I have no clue what happened to the bike. Maybe this was the N+1 that broke the camel's back and the spouse had at it with an F-150. I mean, what does it take to bend a crank arm like that?
