beets as in a concentrated shot. much less friendly than juice or in a salad. 2 shots ($5-6) about 2.5 hours before supposedly results in a 1-2% benefit. Ygduf's recent n=1 experiments claims its worth 2-3%.

We buy bags of powder. Junior will use for 3 months before season.

Heaping tea spoon 4 hours pre-ride. Daily for 2 weeks before. As I mentioned, it is typically done about 3 months a year. I think it could be a 9 month thing - but it can be a drag.

Like so many things it might work, might not and there seems to be more good than harm. The inter-webs quotes, scientific testing etc. seem to all point to a study of less than 10 riders. So not conclusive by any means. But junior *thinks* it helps - and he hates it. He credits some pretty incredible bridges to it and uses the bridge up technique because he has beet root. It is definitely in his head. And while part placebo, or kinda like Rocky drinking raw eggs, when he's in the I'll-do-what-I-hate mode, which always involves beet root, he's pretty tough.

It is supposed to increase nitrates in a way the athlete is putting out more power while actually lowering VO2 use. It has a cumulative effect/stacking/building/loading. So taking it 5 days in a row is better than 2 days. So in theory his VO2 max would be lower at the same power, but more likely his power would be higher at his VO2 max. He hates those VO2 max tests, so I don't know, but I have seen power and time go up on the powder.

To add:
The stuff is a mess. After 6 months (He's at school and left it here), it gets solid-ish. I break off a bit and use in shakes. As y'all know I don't race, so can't testify to anything personally. But it does have certain digestive benefits and I like the taste. Much less expensive than the little packs.
I just took this:

Just out there to have some fun, its really different from being on the road. It was in the high 40s and raining, still had too many layers on.

Thanksgiving day hillclimb on Mt. Hamilton. Pulled the first 10 minutes, got worked over by Eric Wohlberg for the next 55 minutes, then finished solo, 30s down. Temps were in the 40s and it hurt.

I didn't race it this year, but did ride the course last year (same course). You're going to end up partially in the water on that stretch.

shamelessly stolen from Craig Huffman, from whom I'll buy a handful this season once the races have more than 10 people.

Great to see One of My Athletes succeed right in front of my eyes!

Now if the rest of the 4/5's in our 1/2/3's race would not chase down our own break, that would be great..

Why?

My wife has that helmet. It's pretty sharp looking. It goes very well with her black and pink kit.

the pink on the helmet doesnt match the pink on the kit, i guess its just added motivation to get to the elite team so i can have a black and blue helmet where the blue doesnt match the kit either
