Information about a 1931 Raleigh
Last fall I bought this 1931 Raleigh Sports Tourist Model 37 for $50 on Cape Cod. Over the past few months I have learned a bit about this bicycle. For example, I learned that the bikes sold in England used rod brakes and that the ones sold in America used cables. I'd like to know more about this bike and what it's worth once I clean it up and put some tires on it.
Thanks so much.
Kevin

Thanks. That's helpful. Mine is a 1931 but there doesn't seem to a lot of information on it.
I did find this:

Hi Kevin,
Why do you think it's from 1931?
I think it's a bit later...
It would be helpful if you could add some pictures of the brake callipers, ballhead decal, rear mudguard decal, rear hub and frame number...
Best regards,
Jan

I am basing the year from the Raleigh advertising which shows the original Terry seat, top tube shifter, and caliper brakes. But if you have any information that can accurately date this bike I would certainly appreciate it. The hub is stamped AW-9.

After a little more research, it looks like the AW-9 is from 1939, which would make sense. Although the AW hub came out in 1936. The bike is featured in a 1937 advertisement.

In 1937 Raleigh introduced a rivetted metal headbadge instead of a transfer.
In 1939 they introduced new pattern Raleigh caliper brakes and levers.
Your bicycle has both these alterations. That in combination with the rear hub makes it a 1939 model...
