Road bike for kids

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road bike for kids

I did a search and it was mostly old threads with broken links

I got back into riding to spend more time with my kid and my 13 y.o. son is having trouble keeping up, my wife and I are on road bikes, and he is on a mountain bike.
My local shop has limited bikes for sale, and all they offer is 750+ bikes for a kid that will grow out of in one year.

I'm looking to spend 400 or less and there is nothing used in my area.

He would probably prefer proper shifters and what not.

Please suggest a bike, one that am possibly can get online. I use my local shop for everything, but this situation is diffrent.

Thanks
Great to be back. I missed this.

I have been searching for my son as well. He is still a bit young but watching for the future.

so far I have found Argon18 Xenon, Spec. Allez Jr. but both ar are $800.
There is a company in the UK called Frog bikes they make them too, but still not the cheapest. My local shop sells them and they look pretty good but a bit heavier.

Felt had a kids version but they don't come up used very often. My bike shop suggested to find an entry level women's road bike in a XS frame. Kids often can be fit on them if the size fits. So been watching for that too.

There isn't much out there. Good luck....

The thing is, even with the right sized road bike, isn’t it going to have “junior” gearing? Rather than get something that he will still have trouble (though less) keeping up, why not also consider a tandem that may have more range of adjustment for him?

i doubt it will be near what you’re willing to spend, but perhaps it may have more adjustability so he can fit it longer.

Those top bar shifters are less than impressive. It could work as a transition bike for a year or so, but no it is not a good bike. I would rather my kids ride an entry level flat bar bike like this- https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/escape-3

Its slim pickins right now since everyone and their mom is buying bikes, combined with the reduced production while some of China was shut down.

This could work, its a little nicer...but may show its limitations.

My 13yo is at the end of being able to use her road bike and I'm in the same boat because I don't want to spend $600-700 for an entry level road bike.
Most likely ill end up finding a frame and cannibalizing one of my less used road bikes to build it up.

If under $400 is what you are going to pay and want a quality road bike, the scour eBay and Craigslist. Be willing to drive a few hours.
good luck.

Looks sold out from my search. At 13 you can probably find a decent bike on ebay that's affordable that's in the 48-50cm frame size depending on his height, I've been keeping an eye out for a 650c size for my 9yo and 3-400 bike are fairly regular, some with the nice equipment. I'm trying to see if I can pony up the 850 for an Independent Fabrication with Ultegra.

there is this for 275

Cannondale R600womens Road bike in great condition. Size 26. It has the clip in pedals, sigma sport speedometer, air pump attached to bike plus floor pump, 2 water bottle holders, bag attached under seat. There are 3 tubes, and things to change a flat. Would also include the shoes, euro size 39( I wear a 7 1/2). I haven’t used it in several years as I just done have the time anymore. it has been kept in the garage. I’m sure it needs a tune up.
