I have a Miele Aries 1000 that I just got from my dad. Is it a rare bike? I haven't been able to find anything about it on the internet. I'm in the process of disassembling it so I can re-paint it. I always hated the purple colour of it when I was a kid, but I love the bike.

Are there any suggestions on good paints to use to re-paint a Miele? Some of the pictures in this thread look great, and are very nicely painted. One of the things my dad use to joke about is that his purple bike would be much less likely to be stolen because of the ridiculous colour.

Yes, that's essentially the same bike, except mine has yellow wire covers for the brakes/gears.

An Aries 1000 is relatively rare but not valuable. Miele made their name providing Italian style road bicycles and heavily promoting the Italian influence and heritage. While it was a very good strategy for road bicycles, it was poor for ATBs. American and Canadian consumers considered Italy to a 3rd world country when it came to ATB development. Cyclists tended to shy from anything in the ATB field that was associated with Italy. Serious off-road cyclists with dollars to afford an Aries 1000 were more likely to end up with something from the likes of Ritchey, Fisher or Rocky Mountain, who were considered to be avant-garde in the ATB field. The Italian connection and a short, two year life span resulted in poor sales, making the 1000 a relatively rare bicycle. .

After a bit of setback on this build i got the wheelset back from my LBS. Record hubs on Ambrosio rims.

Its been a mission finding matching 3ttt bars and a stem but with luck a nearby ebay seller had a beautiful matching combo for a great price.

I also decided to go from white Campagnolo hoods to black.

Thursday I'm visiting a laser etching place to see if I can get a design on the stem to match the bicycle. Stay tuned.

Are those spoke threads that are showing above the nipples? If so, the spokes would appear to be several millimetres too short.

T-Mar. Out of the 6 sets of wheels my LBS has built for me only this 1 front wheel shows the spoke threads. Good eyes and thanks for pointing it out. The rear doesnt show threads.

Ill have to take it back to get relaced.

UPDATE I'm leaving the wheel as is. LBS and a few other cycling buddies that build wheels say they're fine as is.

Canadian 3ttt stem anyone?

I had this idea ever since buying the frameset. I talked to a half dozen laser marking places and I was finally given the "yes, we'll do it". I'm happy and excited with the result. Price was unbeatable. Almost done with this build.

Thanks Miele Man. These dont turn up in SoCal very often and the color is just pretty. It's on build hold at the moment but I'm excited to at least get it running on a trainer during lockdown.

A neighbor sold me a Miele touring bike for $20. Columbus Cromor frame & fork, canti brakes, low rider rack mounts on the fork, bosses for 3 water bottle cages, Shimano RX100 triple crank. Mis-matched wheels that are both replacements, & non aero Shimano 600 brake levers which are also replacements. No model decal. Did Miele make a touring bike other than the Turista?

Not to the best of my knowledge. 3 bottle mounts? As far as I know not even the Turista had three bottle mounts. It sounds to me as if you have a MIELE FRANKENBIKE and that the previous owner might have had the third pair of bottle mounts brazed on by someone; or perhaps that third pair are RIVNUTS?

Oh, those are non-aero 600 brake levers not calipers if you have cantilever brakes.

This is almost certainly the later, 1990s version of the Turista, as both Columbus Cromor and RX100 would be correct. Since RX100 was a road group with caliper brakes, these late Turista were spec'd with Deore LX cantilever brakes.

Hi, I’m new to Miele’s. I picked up a Turista with Sugino cycloid (oval) chain rings. Any help with year or type of steel, really any info what so ever would be great.

From all the (re)search I've been doing until I subscribed here I think I could possibly have the only Miele Gara from this period in the UK. Didn'r even realise the model name was in the decal. Acquired in Ghana even more unbelievably in mid 1990s and more or less unused since, lurking in garage/shed over the years. Dusted down it looks like, well I'd like to show you (there are pics obvs but as newbie don't think I can post them here - would put them on Flickr though can't send url in a post either.....how would I share them?). Tyres stayed up so went for a quick spin - lovely. I've not touched it mechanically so assume it is entirely original (one bar end missing, tape loose) though the Cinelli bar may have been a custom request at point of purchase. Not a single Miele on ebay today. Is it worth anything? Doesn't suit the shed or my training and deserves a good home. Not sure how busy this thread is so if you come across this one day and are interested do get in touch, and anybody else perhaps can shed light on actual date/era, provenance, set-up etc. Cheers

Welcome to the forum. The 600 Ultegra on your bicycle is the older version with single pivot brakes and down tube mounted shift levers, so it is no newer than 1990. The 1987 and 1988 models didn't use the Road Issue decals. I'm not sure about 1989, as I don't have any Miele literature for that year. Regardless, it's either 1989 or 1990 and the Cinelli bars and stem were OEM. The only items I see that are definite replacements, are the pedals.

I don't have an appreciation for the state of the 2nd hand bicycle market in the UK, so I'll defer to others on value. The relative obscurity of the brand on that side of the pond may hurt value, though prospective buyers should appreciate it as good mid-range model on the basis of the Columbus Cromor tubeset and Shimano 600 Ultegra component group. Make sure you mention the tubeset and group in the titles of any advertising, as this will draw attention, whereas the brand name may not, Picture assist...

Bought myself a Miele Beta with a pink frame and N600 non-index groupset. Added a pump and a pump cup along the top-tube and two old iirc Minoura bronze colour bottle metal cages..

Here’s my Miele Turista GT18. Lugged frame built with Ishiwata 4130 Chrome Moly tubing’s along with chromed fork (S/N: W67318). Sugino VP130 Cycloid triple chain rings with Shimano FD-Z204 front derailleur while the rear derailleur is a Shimano SIS RD-M531. Cantilever brakes. The high pressure Ambrosio wheels are mounted with Miele tires (700X28C).
Unfortunately and as a newbie to BF, I can't attached any pictures.

I haven’t seen many of these over the years and have many unanswered questions over its pedigree; was it a common model? Classified as Low/Mid/High range bike? Any information that you may want to share on this model would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums. Your Turista GT18 is the 1987 model in the Carerra Red colour option. I'd classify this upper entry level, bordering on mid-range. Light Action was 4th level in the Shimano derailleur hierarchy and Z-series was 5th. The Sugino crankset was pretty common on entry level models, though usually in a double version, on bicycles like the Nishiki Olympic. By this time, seamed versions of double butted CrMo tubesets were trickling down into entry level, so plain gauge CrMo tubing would be another cost concession, though one could argue an intelligent one for a grand touring model. It's missing a lot of the amenities that you find on higher level grand touring models of the era, such as bar end shifters, a 3rd set of bottle bosses, lo-rider rack mounts on the fork blades and provisions for a lighting system.. One place where Miele was ahead of the curve, is the rear wheel. It was uncommon to see 700C on GT bicycle blow the $500 mark, especially one with 40 spokes. Based the tubeset and rear wheel, Miele was obviously willing to trade-off some items for increased ruggedness. Original price was likely in the $300-$350 range.

These bicycles were not that popular and the model was dropped for 1988, then came back in the early 1990s. The problem was not that it wasn't a good value or not well made but that it didn't fit the Miele image, which was tailored to Italian styled, competition models. Miele had similar issues in marketing their ATB models. When you think of ATBs and Grand touring bicycles, Italian brands don't generally come to mind.

Many thanks T-Mar for the invaluable information you’ve provided on my Turista.
Understanding that the touring bike and/or Turista models were not of particular interest to Miele, from a marketing/positioning angle, do you or does anybody else have any idea how many Turista were produced by them in the 80’s before they drop the model for a few years?

Rest assured that, as the only owner of this bike, my intent is for it to be my last bike as I thoroughly enjoy riding it. I'm just so interested to know everything about it and proud to ride a Canadian made bike.
