Nice little lunch time ride. 30 ish miles with some punchy climbs and a decent chunk of TSS. Hit new power highs from 1:05 to about 2 minutes, which is nice.

sure but the soreness was associated from a workout i did on my fg, not my recovery rides. i don't even know why the merits of my recovery rides came up.

to anyone who thinks base is equal to maximal hours in z2, i invite you to incorporate 60rpm @ z4+sprint, max cadence, and z3 reps half/half 60/100+rpm. and, tis the season for the battle that is sprinting on a trainer. century this saturday with some bros i haven't seen in a while, i doubt i'll ditch structure altogether tho. also reestimated my ftp based on what i've been doing..who needs testing? if my estimation is roughly correct, i can't complain. 4 months til racing feels short- 1min+sprint workouts are going to come out from around a corner soon and punch me in the lung. plus core, plus DOMS, plus plenty of food. i have between xmas and new years off from work, can't wait to leverage that.

2hrs with 4x5min 50-60rpm 85% and 15min at sweet spot. My first real ride after my FTP test...so with new numbers for my zones. Felt awesome.

I have, but the last time was a good six years ago and I never owned or rode one regularly. So I acknowledge I'm not exactly an authority on the matter, heh.

Pain, suffering, death I feel. Something terrible has happened. Young Skywalker is in pain. Terrible pain. Learn not from this, but what came before. A Jedi is always aware. Where the front wheels goes, the Jedi does follow.

3x15 tempo, "so you feel like you did some work this week".

So I guess like 2 hours with that.

2x20 on the schedule today but a teammate just got a new bike and really wanted to just ride it so instead I joined him for 3 hours of unstructured riding around. It amounted to a good amount more Z3+Z4 than the 2x20s would have, but I have no idea which is the better workout. Probably the structured one.

3.25hrs z2/z3

so i got a compact crankset from my in-laws from xmas, they happened to see it on an amazon wishlist. I was actually on the fence about it, still am. The couple of times I rented bikes with compact setup, I do recall liking the 50, but I don't know if it's really all that different from 53 (although I tend to use 38 a lot more than I use 53, so maybe that's saying something). I'd have to get a new BB so I won't be trying it anytime soon if I do decide to keep it

It absolutely is different and I love mine. I'm switching to a 52/36 in order to have a bit more top end, but that's only because I'm also upgrading to 11spd so I'll have an 11-28 spread. A 34/26 will get you up absolutely anything, and it's honestly pretty rare to need much higher than a 50-11 though there have been a few occasions while racing where an extra gear would've come in handy.

Been on and off being sick the last two months so I really haven't gotten to ride much. Never been sick this much this long...its not bad, just debilitating enough to keep me from activities (I get a sore throat the next day). Just getting over it now, so hopefully I'll be able to get in some quality rides.

Outside of that and real life stuff, my edge has dulled. Illness and burn out are just things everyone has to deal with eventually, I'm sure when my health improves and I'm fast enough where its fun again it'll turn.

Come do a slow ride by the coast. My wife and I will ride with you and you can beat us and feel better. Or you can beat me and feel better.

Lots of assumptions made in there. If one is an experienced racer...maybe. But if one's in one's first season or two, then base is a very good idea. I'm in base right now (mixing with drills and strength sessions...and gym) and added 10% to my FTP so far.

I run a 52/36 11-28. I think I'm going to switch to an 11-26 cassette when I wear out the 11-28. I rarely drop down to the 36/28 and the 3 cog jump from 19-22-25 can be pretty annoying on the big ring with the SRAM cassette spacing. 11-26 gets you the same spacing up to 19 and then 2 tooth jumps from 19-21-23.

I like that article. I don't have enough experience to agree/disagree but I hope it is somewhat correct. I haven't had the time to do huge base and racing starts next month for us!
