Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Sunday ride (September 14th, 2008)

Went to central Florida to do some "hill" riding. Did 56 miles. They also had a 112 mile version, but a stream of "things" prior to starting ucked the joy out of even attempting to do the 112 miles version: woke up 2 hours late, fighting with the dog to walk at that time vs his usual time 3 hours later, my car trying to die on me several times on the 2 hour drive there, having to stop for gas (unscheduled stop) making me even more late, everybody had left 1 hour before by the time I got there, having to haul arz for the first 25 miles to catch up with the group I was supposed to be leaving town/riding with, missing the first turn and ending up with an extra 8 mile detour, and finally having to stop going up Sugar Loaf because I had been hauling arz for the previous 30 miles and was half dead by the time I got there!!! I caught up with the group at the top of sugar loaf "mountain", and rode with them for about 10-15 miles. Then, I just went at my own pace, which was bit "faster", yet I am still reminded by patencad daily that I am too fat for this sport. Tons of hot looking and very well toned women on bikes there. I would venture to guess 90%+ of them were triathletes as this was a ride mostly "advertised/geared" to them as part of the upcoming half and full ironman distance triathlon.

Nice day though and not excessively hot. Had I not had all the excuses above, I would have probably done the 112 mile version. It would be very doable on a day like today given it was not 100F in the shade.

How was you sunday ride?

~45mi solo out MacArthur, Great Falls, Travilah, etc.
Was getting hot and humid by the time I finished around 11.
Enjoyed a few empty streets closed down for the DC Triathlon today, but also was funneled off my intended course as I got back towards Gtown, and suffered 20 blocks or so of squeezing by cars who were re-routed down a tiny street to reach Key Bridge.
All in all tho, no complaints.

Rode down with some friends to the new road race circuit for the Ocala road race coming up. It will be a fast race.

I had a sidewall blowout. On Friday I hit some NASTY crap that immediately flatted my rear tire. I guess that it also weakened the sidewall. The old dollar bill as a tire boot trick got me home OK. I think that I had only about 300 miles on that Conti GP4000s tire.

Did the usual "worlds" ride. Ribs feel almost normal again. General riding doesn't hurt too much, but accerlating, especially out of the saddle is still uncomfortable. I felt good but rode conservatively and mostly just worrying constantly about the damage if I go down again while still healing...

36 miles out and back from San Bernardino to Norco. Took it easy going out and came back fast. I usually blow myself up by going out to fast but this went well and I had a fast time (for me, at least). Usually I can catch a few wheels but nothing and still had a pr. Since I just started up again will probably extend my miles. May try a metric this Friday.

Pfffffffttt. Extra teenagers and 12-year-old boys all over the house. Leaving the house unsupervised is not an option. I can't go out and play.

So I'm changing out wheels and cleaning bikes.

<big sigh>

50 miles solo. Knee pain at 40 miles this time instead of 30, so that's good. Saw 5 peacocks, 2 deer, 2 gators, and a hawk that I thought was going to attack me for some reason.

Not at home this weekend but I got up at 6:30 am and had some breakfast. Got dressed for riding, grabbed the bike, water bottles, and a granola bar and headed out the door at about 7:15. Rode about a mile through town and hit the Kern River bike path/MUP in Bakersfield and went west. It's all FLAT as a pancake so it's a good speed test for me.

28 total miles
1:57 mins TT***
12 mins total break (3)
1:45 saddle time
14 3/4 mph overall avg speed
16 mph avg speed

***BONUS
NEW PB time on this route
Old time = 2:10

Discovered I had a bearing go bad or something. The front hub is dragging horribly. The wheel barely spins if you lift it off the ground and give it a light push. Maybe it revolves 1/4 turn or so and then stops and you can see that something is preventing it from spinning freely. Brakes are well clear of the rim and the hub got warm to the touch. Without the dragging wheel I think I could have done the trip in less than 1:45 TT. Good thing I ordered a new wheelset last week (C'MON Thursday!)

20 mile "tt" effort. Finished in under an hour (pancake flat Phoenix) and was actually able to produce negative splits this time without feeling like my legs are made of wood! Oh, and I was able to stop in the LBS and get my steerer tube cut to fit, now the bike looks perty (as perty as a Trek can look anyways). All in all a fun day out.

10 miles solo. Pretty windy, I did the same route I tried to do yesterday, but didn't get lost this time. Yesterday was 13 miles, today was 10. Avg was somewhere around 13 mph. About 45 miles for the week. Not bad for my first week of owning a road bike.

Having trouble keeping my cadence up, I feel like I spend a lot of effort trying to keep my feet on the pedals. I'm SO ready for my clipless pedals to get here... GRR.

standard Sunday morning group ride..41 miles of flat NJ terrain at A pace (24-26mph with an average of 20mph today with stops). This heat and humidity wave is no fun when you're in autumn mode.

Developed some left knee soreness half way into the ride. I've only been riding since the last week of july so I still haven't worked all my fitting kinks out yet...first was stem length, next is bar width and then a tie between stem height and a new saddle. I like to be totally comfy when training, whether it be rowing, riding or running. Only 22 though and picked up cycling as running was ruining my knees...go figure. Ran on saturday and they felt great and now today i have a sore left knee. haha.

off topic but the ride leader is the LBS owner where we ride out of and he made a slight adjustment to my cleats when we got back so we shall see.

25 miles in the remnants of Hurricane Ike. There wasn't a ton of rain, just lots and lots of wind and strong gusts. When I was done, it felt like I had ridden 40 or 50 miles. Riding in random gusts is tiring!

Did an easy 15 on the MUP. There weren't many people out as I was pretty early (~8:45-9:45). I noticed some remnants of Hanna on the path. Lots of leaves down and had to ride through mud at one point. It was under one of the main roads and it was somewhat shadowed and I didn't see it in time. Gave me a good reason to wash the bike when I got home.

On another note, it was the first time I've worn a helmet on a ride. It wasn't uncomfortable and I didn't really mind the helmet itself, but it makes it much harder to wipe sweat off my brow.

Climbing some steep hills today I saw a new HR high of 192bpm. I had to get off my bike and sit down for a few minutes. I thought I was going puke, but didn't. I must be a masochist.

I was supposed to do Bike Philly today, but transportation issues prevented me from doing so. Instead, I took one of the streets here ALL of the way up and went from there.

I did 37 miles. I thought it was more.
