PSA: Mr. Tuffy "Ultra-Lite" Tire Liner Weight Scam

Hopefully this isn't the wrong subforum for this.

The Mr. Tuffy "Ultra-Lite" Tire Liners are advertised as half the weight of their regular liners. As it turns out, they weigh exactly the same. The grooves that run along the Ultra-Lites look to be there for appearances only. I guess Mr. Tuffy thought they could make the product look like it was lighter and nobody would notice that it wasn't without a scale.

Hopefully if you're in the market for tire liners, this will save you from wasting a couple extra bucks under false pretenses. It's a pretty small amount of money, but it's also a pretty scummy way of doing business.

Before anyone calls weight weenie: The extra weight isn't the slightest concern to me at all. I bought the set of the Ultra-Lites because they were only a few dollars more and figured I'd use them under training tires while the regular liners went onto my commuter. As with all things, it's the principle of the matter .

Isn't that lawsuit worthy? Not that I'm saying you should... but still. I think companies should be punished for stuff like this.

Starkist tuna got sued for skimping on like 0.05oz of tuna in their cans.

your comparisons may be misleading by not weighing the same models. i have used both over a number of years and it's readily apparent when even lifting them by hand they the ultra lights are indeed lighter.

the packaging facilitates switching the products without the knowledge of the buyer. this has been reported in the past on this forum.

A. If you're a weight weenie, you're not putting tire liners in your tires to begin with.
B. From my own experience, tire liners don't seem to be of any use, so no matter which ones you buy, you're probably wasting your money.

I've heard enough people say they've helped that I was willing to try them. I also currently use Gatorskins and wanted to experiment with using a supple tire with lightweight liners.

What do you mean by this? The Ultra-Lite version of the same model should be lighter no?

From my own experience, with tire liners i went from 1 flat a week to 0 flat in nearly 3 years. Though i also changed to marathon tour plus tires.

Anybody weighed equal lengths?

Indeed, the videomaker weighed the rolls right out of the box and perhaps they were the exact same length-- I have not contacted the company about this.

I have used these liners for over a decade and can honestly say that my flat tire stats were significantly reduced. Much time has passed since this thread was started and I wounder if anyone has objectively measured equal lengths of the two models of liner...? Thx in advance!

Yes, it's an old thread, but I've searched and have not yet read a definitive answer.
I simply want the truth.

Exactly why all threads should have an expiry date. Fine to quote something from an old thread, but resurrecting threads about products that may no longer exist is not useful

Agreed. But if this product did not exist anywhere, I for one, would most likely not be interested and would not have posted.

I contacted the manufacturer and look forward to a reply. I will post my findings in a new thread for anyone interested.

Did they get sued? Did the weight change? Did the guy ever get a flat tyre? Will we ever know?

they do weigh the same...

I was frustrated by the lack of data so this month I bought a Mr Tuffy Ultra Lite orange, Mr Tuffy orange, and RhinoDillos blue.
All three, on their packages, say they are for 700x20-25 and 27x1.

The weights per tire liner are:
61g each - Mr Tuffy Ultra Lite orange - with grooves
63g each - Mr Tuffy orange - no grooves
72g each - RhinoDillos blue - no grooves

So thrillhouse is correct:
> The Mr. Tuffy "Ultra-Lite" Tire Liners are advertised as half the weight of their regular liners.
> As it turns out, they weigh exactly the same.
> The grooves that run along the Ultra-Lites look to be there for appearances only.

So you wanted to stop buying Gatorskins and instead turn a perfectly good tire into pseudo-Gatorskins? Ok.

Edit: arg, freaking necro thread.
