we definitely need to hear the story behind the Bumby! Very cool!
in the spirit of obscure builders, let me offer my fillet brazed frame from Gordon Borthwick.....
Gordon made this for me in 1989. He was based in Marshalltown, Iowa, and was building frames as a hobby after retiring as a mechanical engineer. Most of his work was tandems, which were having a resurgence at that time. The tandem business is what led him to focus on fillet brazed frames.
The frame has over 55,000 miles on it, and still gets a fair bit of use.

My Fabio Barecci.
I have little info on this bike, but I think Fabio was an Italian that built this line of bikes for BS of Spain. I've never seen another one in the States, just 1 or 2 for sale in Spain. Cool Colnago-ish paint scheme and a nice rider.

Jeff Bumby was the owner of "Rippin' Good Cookies" in Ripon WI and was an amateur racer. When he sold his business, he decided to retire and build bike frames for fun. I don't think he made more than a few dozen altogether. But since he didn't have to worry much about making a profit, he could take his time building. He came to Mike Appel's (former Trek builder) shop in Madison WI to learn from Appel, who was quite the perfectionist. Appel also painted Bumby's frames. Mine is a very subtle two-tone job; burgundy and desert rose, with pinstriped lugs. It wasn't built for me but for the wife of a local paper executive who no longer rode it. I picked it up as a frame/fork/headset/bottom bracket on Craigslist a few years ago.

It reinforces a theory of mine that the best way to make a living as a frame builder is to be retired.

I for one, absolutely want to see the bare frame, that's how you see what the paint covers up. Think of it this way, could you leave it bare and just clearcoat?
