I carefully count turns of the nip as I go around the wheel
so as to slowly bring up the tension equally..

my spoke nip screwdriver has a projection in the center ..
like this*, so spoke pushes up and screwdriver won't engage slots
then you go on with a spoke wrench..

your drive by bike shop guy, didnt have tandem length cables?



Cable quick disconnects , , for S&S coupled frames..
can also work for extending commonly available brake /gear cables
placed on bare cable , between housing stops..

No tandem length cables. But I have two tandems (two and tree seat), so the bakfiets means three bikes that need the long cables. Maybe I’m a one-man market for him.

Mr Rabbit, thank you again. There are a few extra spokes and the extra nipples. You’re good to work with!

my friend bought a Vélofix franchise. He had been repping some bike gear (shoes or something) but wanted to be at home more. It is indeed a nice setup.

Wheel is done, new tire and tube on. New drum brake levers on. New cables (not quite) on. A bit of a snag in mounting the wheel. Turns out that the band for the brake reaction arm is sized for “normal” forks. My bike has thick tube BMX style forks and the band won’t wrap around.

The other issue is that standard forks taper a lot more towards the crown than mine do, so the reaction arm is about 1/2” inbound of the fork leg. I have a bit of square steel tubing, some 12-ga sheet and a welder, so I should be able to fab up a mount, but it will be a couple more days.

Years ago I put drum brakes on a 26" wheel BMX cruiser. I just bent the reaction arm outward to contact the fork leg and held it in place with a hose clamp. It worked fine.

Get in touch with a proper bike shop .. brick and mortar ..
those clips that wrap around the fork blade are made for several diameters,
but the one included in the box, with the hub, was not what you need in this situation

Obviously..

Wow. Actual bike shop. No sarcasm intended, but it had literally never occurred to me. Well, it did, but my local shop is pretty useless. They cater to the transient vacation and rental beach crowd. They replace tubes and assemble cheap beach cruisers.

But I figured out I could trim off a segment of square tube and file a curve to match the fork leg. I can pass a hose clamp through that. I then attached a section of 3/8” square tube for the arm tip to pass through. It’s ugly, but once I fit it, I’ll file it down and paint it. Then I’ll find the proper size clamp.

Here The busy season is when Bike tourists by the hundreds ride the pacific coast
some ending their trips in SD, Having started at the Canadian border..

My Drum brake is on a tapered blade fork , alternates for non tapered ones have been offered..

I just wont go find it for you on Amazon.

Why buy something for a few dollars that you can spend an embarrassingly long amount of time doing to slightly worse effect? At least that’s my motto.

I might trim it down and fab a more permanent band later if I feel motorvated.

I made a drum brake wheel for my Raleigh Twenty. I like the maximum number of crosses for aesthetic reasons, and I did 3x with 36 spokes. It works. But there's nothing wrong with 2x.

So a quick update. I’ve got it on and rolling. My cable housing is too short and the tandem cable I bought had the wrong end on it. So I’m using my old cable for the time being. Luckily I have another 50’ of housing!

I really like it so far. It lights up at a walk.... literally. When I walk the bike the light comes on. The brake has already broken in a bit and when I replace the cable and housing I’ll adjust again. It’s already heaps better than the caliper. The SA levers are also much better on the rear drum as well.

will a cable splitter (as suggested before) connecting 2 common cables work?

Probably would have worked, but a new tandem cable is just a couple bucks. Also, this has a full run of housing so there’s no place to splice it in the middle.

The VW cable is about 1/8" diameter. Probably a little much.

Some custom motorcycle shops can make cables with any soldered-on end. Long ago I had some custom cables built for a tadpole (two front wheels) trike which operated both front brakes from one lever. They were made by Flanders Motorcycle in Pasadena.
