Tasty! I second having gugie make the decaleur, I’ve got one as well and it’s a great piece. Plus, then it’ll match the bag support up front.

Incredible build of that bike, the rear center pull cable stop is one of the most elegant I have seen fabricated. It follows an engineering principal I try and use in my daily work, "Simple Elegance".

@gugie has nailed this one perfectly, @stahlrahmen you are fortunate to have such a beuatiful bike coming your way, nice collaboration with the Gugemiester.

Love watching this thread. My Gugie'd Competition was possibly the best bicycle decision I have ever made.

That cable stop though... super nice!

After considering trading one of my bikes for a Maxwell Smart communication device, duty calls.
@stahlrahmen is all in (mostly) on a Alex Singer homage. The front rack with detachable lowriders is quite different than what I'ved done in the past:

I haven't done one like this. It's a puzzle trying to figure out how to make something new.

First, the U-turn stays need to be sussed out. Mitch Pryor makes some nice rack tabs (attachment points for racks). Trying to match a curved tube with a hand-filed curved piece of metal squarely sounds like a baseball adage:

Once that small trick was made, a larger hurdle. All physical attachments have 6 degrees of freedom, 3 in position, 3 in rotation. Any jig must reduce this to zero. Like a monkey trying to reach for bananas that are just out of reach, I look around for some sticks, pieces of metal, clamps, anything to help me out.

Fire up the torch, tack it together, more later.

Creative jigging there, @gugie! Ya gotta love all the many uses of angle aluminum, c-clamps and spring clamps.

Not obvious from your camera angles, but do those bottom straps that attach to the fork eyelets bend through an arc, so they allow vertical compliance?

Not really. I was a bit concerned about this, but the Singer design has been in use for a long time, and I know a few people who have built from the same design with no problems. Velo Orange sells a model that's the same, except the low riders aren't detachable.

I'm sure this rack design will stiffen the front fork vertically. Adding weight with lowriders will create more force for flex. I'm not sure if the two cancel each other out, but 42mm wide tires do a lot to suck up road shock.

@verktyg has a signature that includes "don't believe everything you think". I feel a lot more comfortable using a tried and true design.

Nice work on the rack. I have a VO front rack that I've contemplated having some sort of detachable low-rider mounts made for. Looking forward to seeing how yours works out.

The VO front racks have attachment points that would work well. Your fork should also have double eyelets. Sharing them with fenders makes it difficult to integrate a low rider.

This is a great thread, it looks like your bike will be a nice tourer. I will follow it with interest. I am looking for a rear rack for my '84 Pro Tour. Am considering the VO Campeur. It is a bit spendy, but looks bulletproof.

Actually, for a fully stainless steel rack, it's a really good value. Aluminum alloy racks aren't nearly as tough.

Thank you @gugie I appreciate your input. The rack lists at $165 and they are having their 20% off sale which would put it at $132, but to get free shipping you need to spend $150. Another excuse to buy something else from them. Now I just need to convince my wife that I "need" it.

I'd be happy to write her a letter of justification.

"Dr. Mrs. CountryBiking,

I know that your husband seems to have several racks. Right now he needs one more.

Yours,
Gugie"

Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Gugie reworked my 74 Super Tourer last year (Gugie-made lowriders not pictured):

Are you going to be able to save the chrome on the fork and rear triangle? Mine was toast, but really wish it had been salvageable. Super classy with the chrome.

Would love a Gugificazione-decaleur sometime soon. Getting pretty fed up with the VO headset mounted one swiveling back and forth.

There was a good back and forth on that. The chrome was pretty good front and rear. @stahlrahmen had a vision of an Alex Singer blended with a Peter Weigle reconstruct. Peter's had good chrome, and was saved. The Alex Singer had chrome sox front and rear. A breakthrough came when our OP found a local wet painter in Germany that also did chrome at a very reasonable price. With that, double eyelets were added on the front fork, a rubber chain slap guard, and the Huret to Campy style dropout conversion that we did on your frame. It'll get rechromed.

Really like the decals you added, just the right touch, BTW. That old school cursive Raleigh script logo is my favorite.

E-mail me about a decaleur, I have a batch in progress, can probably squeeze you in.

More pix:

Vent hole, slightly enlarged, makes room for brass tube up to the fork crown. M3 screw brazed on acts as the neutral. The headset conducts the neutral to the frame, the frame bone is connected to the tail light bone, etc.

Power pops out top

Schmidt spade connectors are tight. Real tight. As in, you're changing a flat and it's cold, you're tired, and hard to reconnect. Mini banana plugs are easy on and off, yet are very secure. @southpawboston coached me up on this trick. Crimp the banana plug to the spade, add heat shrink, voila.

UPDATE!

Build finished, time to pack it up and ship to Germany, where chrome and paint will be applied.

After some discussion, we determined that a custom rear rack was in order. The VO off the peg one didn't work well with the fenderline.

Details:

A lot more pictures of this rework can be found here.
