Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a way out, but it involves living in squalor which mrs datlas is not on board with.

What do you do during the summers? I'm not sure I'm wired for summers off.

No, I am NOT making any changes. I am ready to ride out another full cycle. My advice is really towards those 65+.

Sad story: my aunt, who is now around 80, lost about HALF of her investment value in the crash 10 years ago. She could not accept any more risk and got out at the bottom of the market. If she had stayed in, she would have been on easy street.

Buy low, sell high. It's kinda high now, so reasonable to sell if you are over-leveraged and older.

Heh ... work. We (faculty) technically have a four-week 'vacation' period in July/August, but other than that ... work, and even then ... work. My post is a combined teaching/administrative one, so there's always something.

The upside: outside of in-class lecture hours, useless meetings etc. there are no 'set' hours, so flex-time all the time. Lots of riding.

That, and as a result of the Age of Teh Interwebz I can do most of my summer stuff remotely, so in mid-June we get out of here (SW Ontario) and out to summer place on the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. Makes a change. Mrs. Badger (retired R.N.) stays out until our Thanksgiving wkd; I fly back and forth two/three times (short commute flight), then stay put when term starts in September. We'll probably have to pull in our horns a little when I retire, but for now not a bad way to get through the year.

Edit: that's assuming we survive the next big correction. @datlas is skeering me.

I am incredibly nervous/antsy as I don't want to ride out another full cycle. So hard to determine when preservation becomes more important than growth. No wife. No dependents. No debt. Entitlement to a modest pension. Non-lavish lifestyle. My situation is somewhat unique.

Yeah, my strategy involves a double-wide out in the country. We could live nicely off our savings if we really down-sized and ate mostly rice and beans. Plus, there is good cycling out there too.

The barrier is mrs datlas, and you know what they say....it's cheaper to keep her.

I am no financial advisor but you may want to hedge and convert maybe a portion of your investments to something more stable. I am not doing this but it has even crossed my mind. If you are 10+ years out from retirement, don't do it.

That's me. My stuff is in a very conservative/diverse/low risk managed portfolio -- defined contribution pension fund. Didn't get hit too badly in the Last Big One, and the risk managers have (I'm told) taken steps to further reduce exposure in the event of a Next Big One. We shall see.

Makes one wonder how much of that benefit cycling can achieve.

I feel blessed that I can still run after all these years engaged in all types of running activities. I mean when we were kids, way before the internet and before video games and yes, even before tv, kids played outdoors and my favorite games involved running. I don’t do any running for fitness now but I'm thrilled that I can still get around the bases pretty effectively.

Exactly. Leveraged, according to my definition, means you bought securities on credit. I'm not that much of a playa.

We are 63 and gradually shifting from about >85% equities to an eventual target of 70 or so. That's all. We also just set up a charitable gift fund so we can begin selling off old and highly appreciated stuff tax free and get rid of some companies that are bad for the world in the process. It's great thing for anyone who has a lot of cap gains and gives away significant amounts of money.

If you've got good mechanics, running is actually pretty benign to the knees. I didn't have any problems over a 35 yr career. I had plenty of tendon and muscle issues, though.

Oh, and it also destroyed my spine, I went numb and tingly from the neck down, and had to have big surgery, which is why I don't do it anymore, but that's a minor thing.
